Default reseting a ecu

how is this done? i've been having a problem with my spedometer...it doesn't wokr. everything else does. i checked my speedo cable on both ends and it seems alright. i was told to take out the speed (sensor???) i guess and reset my ecu and usualy this will work but i am not sure how to do so. i'd like to know how fast i'm going pretty soon here so i would really appreciate your help.

there is an ecu fuse in the panel under the hood. pull it for 5 or 10 minutes. the speed sensor is a cable coming fom the firewall to the top of the trans.
