I think the problem with the noise during start is the starter grinding against the flywheel.

That's two separate issues.

The starting problem is a starter solenoid and the 3rd gear grind is a synchro ring/hub/sleeve/possible shift fork issue.

for my 3rd gear grind ive been using synchromesh and it worked for a while (i know its just a patch up for grinding gears) but then the grind came back after 4k miles. I think im going to do another tranny fluid change. As for the starter solenoid, i'll go get it checked out. Thanks again

one more question. Will it make my problem worse if i keep starting my car with this problem?

Eventually you'll need to replace the starter.

when i went to the shop to get a valve adjustment and new alternator, i asked him to replace the starter too, but he said it was a transmission problem. So im kind of confused, but are u certain i need to replace the starter? thanks for the help

Dependent on how hard you shift you will need to replace the tranny too. I have both of the same problems with my LS. Unfortunately I'm much further along with the third gear...aka it's gone. The other problem is definitely the starter. My tranny is out of the car right now and I can see where the damn starter has started to chew up the teeth on my relatively new ACT fly wheel .

Yea when i get on it, i shift pretty hard; so maybe investing on a new tranny, or a tranny synchro rebuild with a gsr 5th gear would be a good idea. Does anybody have DIY steps on how to put in a new starter, sounds simple to do but havent done i yet. hah
