NEED HELP! How to grind tungsten?
I use a 6" bench grinder to sharpen my tungsten. I bought it for $20 from Harbor Freight. Hold the tungsten tangent to the surface of the wheel until you achieve your desired tip. Just make sure nothing else ever touches that wheel, cause that'll contaminate the tugnsten.
what he ^^^^ said although I really am thinkin about buyin a tungsten grinder because seems like everytime i go to use my grinder somone else has grinded something else with it
Screw all that junk.....this stuff here http://www.welding-direct.com/chemtunpoinp.html is the heat!!!! Just do like it says, and it work like a charm. Or you can just hit the tungsten with a MAP torch till hot. The chemical reaction with the powder keeps the tip lava hot while immersed in it.

Interesting! Anyone else use this with good results?

Yeah, I use a grinder which sees other materials as well. Probably not the best method, but I never seem to have any problems. If I were really doing something structural though, I'd probably go the clean route. I do at least hit the tip with brake cleaner after I sharpen...doesn't do much for embedded contamination though, just surface.
It's certainly all about the point and the length of the tip.

Same here. This way's the best if you don't buy a tungsten grinder. I actually see no need to buy one. A lot of guys on the welding forums don't even use them. They all seem to use this technique.

the proper technique also is the tip pointing up

I'm curious what difference it would make if it was pointed up or down??

I think what he meant was not to hold the tungsten sideways.
I just snapped some pictures to help visualize the procedure:
Start with a "dull" tungsten:

Put it on the grinder wheel as shown below, and turn it in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion to grind all around it:

Grind it until you achieve your desired tip:

And after you grind a few of tungstens, you get a "channel" engraved on your grinder wheel. This makes it a lot easier to grind the tungsten, as it won't move side to side on the wheel. I recently bought this grinder, but you can see that I already have a "channel", even though it's quite shallow right now.

Yes, it's terrible, awful results!

I'm not on my home computer, otherwise I'd show you some of my terrible looking steel and SS welds too.

youll get fine enough results using a bench grinder... but if u wanna be all technical to show off to the newbs ... yes the arc will not travel as direct as it would with a $1000+ tungsten grinder

i think he may have been referring to welding aluminum, and how you ball the tip. but you still grid it first.
