I call this the OH SNAP!!! thread. My Timing belt broke at 65mph, story inside..
hello pimps and pimpettes, i got a sad story i thought i'd share with you in thought u'd help me. Well, here it goes, couple of weeks ago my water pump took a **** on me. Yesterday, me and my buddy decide to go head and put it on there i got a new water pump, t-belt, t-belt tensioner, crank seal, cam seals, balancer shaft seal at AutoZone. We started around 9:30 A.M and took the bitch apart. Well, turns out my t-belt and all that crap i bought was in mint condition so i decide not to replace them i just replaced the water pump. So, we inspected the harmonic balancer the inside of it was moving, so we call autozone up and they told us they got one in stock. I hop into my mom's 99 Mirage and that 1.5liters of madnes with auto tranny was roarin like a ferrari from me tryin to get that part and get the lude back on the road. I told the kid at auto zone it was a dohc, vtec and sohc part won't fit after the got me the part cuz the one he gave me was 4 rib instead of 5 rib and bigger in diamter. He told me don't worry man it'll fit so i go back and we put the harmonic balancer on, turns out we can't use a 5 rib belt so i ride up there again and get a 4 rib belt. By 2:30 PM we were done and i cranked her up , started right up had a lil gas gauge problem but, turns out my float was stuck from raising the back to inspect breaks. It was idling nice and everything i let her warm up to make sure the water pump's workin and i take her out for a spin , drove it for about 20 mins and put gas in it twice to get the gauge to read it (explained above). Well i decide to take some more stuff back to autozone to be exact the valve cover gasket cuz they gave me one for h23 and it wouldn't fit my h22. I hit the highway and i'm in the middle of a 4 lane highway , with my stereo thumpin and the cool breeze gettin in throught my window and sunroof , just enjoyin the lude bein back on the road. Well, i hit about 65mph to pass a slow movin truck and right after i got infront of it my rpms just dropped and 5 seconds later the car shuts off. I'm like son of a bithc i start punchin the dashboard n ****, while a cop is rollin by me and i try to flag him down but he rolled off. I call my buddy up and he's like it's ur fuel pump, while in the mean time the Highway Accident response Unit guy is knockin on my window. I asked him wat could be wrong and he said timing belt then i call my buddy up again and tell him and he's like SHIIT, now remember this guy has 30+ years of mechanic experiance. So we tow it up there , t-belts shreaded. So we call autozone up today and they told me they'll give me a new t-belt. But we're goin up there tomr to talk to store manager about buying me a new balancer and timing cover cuz mine was cut to pieces by that balancer that was i believe off of a sohc prelude. Couple of questions for yall: 1. Is my motor hurt? ( if it is i'm gettin on auto zone for a new block), 2. Is there any chances they'll pay for my parts and possibly the motor if it's damaged. the story is long as hell and i know i'm forgettin something, if it doesnt' make sense ask me. thakns
Sucks about your car but in the end it is YOUR responsibility to make sure you got the correct parts.
what about my engine, anyone think i'd have warped valves or anything?
sorry to hearabout ur lude sucks ... but you are about to experence big bissness First of all your motor dosnt have a balancer it has a crank pilley all h22s are internaly balanced just f.y.i. ... I was a manager at a kragens for a while here in cal and if you came in to my store and told me that you bought a part from my store that you knew to be the wrong part put on your motor and it blew up that i would tell you was your own bad that you intentily put on the worng part . i wold tell them that the parts guy didnt tell you thet the pully was incorrect you might get some money but i highly dought it .
dude i didn't even know they had just a pulley, it didn't damage my balancer belt or anything, so i'll see wats gonna happen tomr when we talk to the store manager, so more than likely my motor's ****?
When your timing belt breaks your pistons and valves end up slapping together. So your engine is toast! If Autozone will pay for a new H22 (which they wont) you'll be set. And another H22 bites the dust

fuckkk we'll see what happens tomr, somebody told me some cars were made with dished pistons so the valves don't hit?
So let me get this straight. From what I could decipher:
1) You bought a new timing belt, water pump, etc.
2) You decided against installing the timing belt, just the water pump.
3) You install the wrong crank pulley, fully knowing that it didn't even fit the stock belts. 4 ribs vs. 5 ribs.
4) Your timing belt broke.
Am I missing something here?

Uh, no.
Uh, no.
The piston heads in H22 ARE NOT dished they are high compression poistons. Even a honda engine with dished pistons wil end up hitting the vavles if the timing belt breaks.

i didn't install them cuz they gave me the wrong ones, they gave me ones for 2.2 sohc plus the car had brand new honda belts , from when the guy rebuilt it ( i bought those from autozone just to be sure in case i need to change mine but turns out that they gave me all the wrong ****, the t-belt tensioner, everything, the t-belt itself was about 4 inches shorter)

There are valve relief cut in all Honda pistons but they are not deep enough to ensur that when the timing belt breaks that the valves and piston wont make contact. The only way to tell if things didnt make contact is to tear it down, and given the rate of speed you were traveling the odds are NOT in your favor.
uh, so you DID or DID NOT install the vatozone T-belt? I cant understand your story. If you didnt change it, theres no way in hell they will pay for anything! Also, once they look up the parts and see you bought the wrong pulley, you're toast either way. OEM honda parts for the win...
I got lucky when my timing belt went(it went the day I was bringing it in to get changed). I was going ~20 in my neighborhood and it started to make a funny noise so i shut it off. It didn't start back up again and I could hear that the valves were staying open via the intake so I had a tow truck come and we spent over almost an hour tryin to get it up un the bed.
But I think 65 will pretty much screw over your engine. Autozone sold me the wrong radiator, but it wouldnt even line up right so i knew it was wrong. They were even ******** about taking it back, I just took it out of the box and saw it was different and brought it back. I have had a few problems with them and avoid them whenever possible. I do my parts shopping via Honda, pep boys, or a local shop(if you are a regular customer, they will usually sell you just the part if you ask, but that all depends)
Anyway, good luck

thanks for the replies guys me and my buddy are headin up there in about 10 mins, they all know him up there cuz he worked there for 15 years and i been shopping there for 5 yrs so i'm hopin we'll get something out, i'll keep u posted
they have no liability for work you do on your engine. end o story. nothing you can do except chalk it up as a loss and strat the swap. like they said before you bought the wrong parts and tried to put them on the wrong engine so it's your fault and no one elses
went to the autozone today with my buddy, talked to the store manager and he said he's gonna pay for the timing belt and timing blet cover and i have to buy the right pully, and told me to keep the one they gave me at autozone in case my motor is bad , if it is bad, we're gonna go after the part manufacturer..
