Default radiator fan problem

i noticed a few weeks back it seemed like my fan would come on and off too often and for too short of time, even when the car was cold. i've sence noticed the fan never comes on at all anymore. the other day i ran wires from the batt. straight to the fans harness and it came on.

this is on a 96 civic ex, what controls the fan? or what else could it be?

Change the fan switch, looks like this

Its on top of your thermostat housing. Might want to change your thermostat also. I had this happen to me and I changed all that worked great for a year then it all went to poop, now I just have a switch inside so I can turn it on and off.

i bought mine at the dealer. thermostat and switch/sensor cost about $40 for both. i checked an auto parts store for the thermostat and they had it but they needed to special order the gasket. so i went w/ OEM

keep in mind that the could be the switch OR the relay. ground out the lead to the switch and the relay should close to turn on the fan, if it does not...then you may have a faulty fan relay.

You can do a ghetto fix to that. You can bend a paper clip and push it into the fan socket. It basically hot-wires the fan. If the fan comes on when you put the paper clip in, then your fan switch is definately bad. Just replace it with an OEM part, as others have said its cheap.
