Two Questions, I ordered a zex 105300 Stage-2 cam for my Y8 with springs (the website said the only requirement for the cam was springs so i didnt get retainers)..

Q-1) Is it dangerous for me to be installing the cam and using it with stock retainers?.. i know if you pop a retainer it could really !@#$ things up big time...are the springs enough or do i need to get retainers?.. i have stock rev limit.

Q2) A few people who installed the cam tell me about the horrific 'chain-saw' type sound it makes.. i'd hate to have my engine sounding any louder than the diesel like sound it got when i installed my Srp pistons... Is there any way around the sound? what is the correct valve lash on the I/E so i avoid the sound, i dont care if the sound changes upon vtec engagement , but at idle and low rpms NO!..

I just instaled 59300 ZEX cam on my d16z6,adjusted valve lash and no problems with sound!
And I run it stock- springs and retainers..

As I could imagine how it works,I'd better get those retainers if I had harder springs. No harder springs and no retainers then. It's recommended to use them both,but most people run it stock if don't rev more than stock rev limiter.

 

what valve lash did you use roberts?.. people tell me they get that weird chattering sound at .007 and .009 .

 

I used stock! The same as it was written in manual that came with camshaft.
