k&n filter cleaning
you can buy the K&N filtercharger kit/recharger for about $9 at Kragen Auto parts or your local auto parts store.. OR you can pay $15 for the exact same kit at a performance/speed shop hehe... anyway the instructions will be on the box...
basically you take off your filter.. brush off pebbles/leaves/bugs/etc ...then you spray it w/ the K&N cleaning solution/detergent (comes in a white spritz/spray bottle) and let it soak/clean for a while.. then you turn on the hose/faucet and w/ a low pressure/current rinse the filter from the inside out.. make sure u rinse from the inside.. so dirt particles, oil, etc.. is flushed out... once its clean again (whitish/grey) let it air dry... then oil it up w/ the red K&N oil (supplied in your recharger kit).. make sure you oil all areas of the filter and in between the pleats of the guaze... let it soak in.. then redo any missed spots.. and you can put it back on..

How long does it take to air out after you rinse it with water? It's 5pm now and I wonder if I can do everything and put it back on by 8pm before it gets dark? Is that possible or advisable?
it depends on your outside/ambient air temp conditions... right now in So Cal its about 90+ deg.. so it would dry pretty quick.. I usually let it air out for a few hours until its pretty dry to the touch.. then I oil the pleats/rows spray the pleats then let it soak in for a bit..then look for the non colored (the oil is red) spots... and do those..
EDIT: haha this thread is so old I forgot I replied before...

DO NOT use too much oil... or it will be dripping for the next 3 days
How can we make sure we don't over oil the filter (us first timers..)? Is there an easy method we can use so we don't put too much on? Like keep moving the bottle up & dn without stopping at any one spot?
Direction for cleaning is included in cleaning kit.
If it's dripping oil you're over doing it.

One more question. Does the filter come off the pipe? or does it stay attached to a piece of the intake. I got under the car over the weekend just to check things out and see what I need to do for this coming weekend when I will actually be cleaning it. It seems I have to remove like a foot or more or the end piece of the intake to take it out. Does the K&N filter seperate from the pipe? I loosened the last clamp which seemed to be sitting on the filter and I couldn't pull the filter out of the intake.. It would go out like 1/2-1" and then something was preventing it from sliding out of the intake. Is there a trick to it? You can tell I didn't install it..
i did that on my go-ped luckily it is 2 stroke but anyways. The filter works with oil that is what really catches all the nasty stuff in the air. too much is bad because it will get sucked in your intake piping and on into you throttle body so make sure not to over due it but not enough is just as bad.
Because of this thread, I decided to finally go out and spend the 10 bucks on the cleaning kit and clean my filter. DAMN IT WAS DIRTY! A tip for anyone else cleaning is to pull apart the fins and use water or a brush to get dirt that may be trapped therin, I thought I had gotten evreything but pulled back the fins to reveal some nice dead bugs.
the filter comes apart/off from the intake pipe.. if you look at the base/end of the filter (where it connects to the pipe) there is a large clamp/hose clamp that clamps the filter onto the intake pipe.. undo that clamp and then pull the filter off from the base.. you might have to turn or wiggle it a little but it will come off..
make sure you unscrew that clamp so it won't be holding the filter on the intake pipe. Btw, would it be alright if you just go out and buy those $20 filter from autozone to replace it to your aem cai instead of the k&n filter??
Thanks, I 'll try it again this weekend. I did loosen up the clamp all the way but I don't think I tried twisting it that much while pulling. Would it be easier to take off the last piece of the intake with the filter attached and take the filter off while I 'm standing up and I can see what I 'm doing?
Getting under the car with 2600lbs just 1" away from your body and looking up trying to work is a real pain.
I think I 'll go out and buy some car stands. I don't trust that $30 jack..

if you plan on doing any work on your car or under your car you should have jack stands anyway.. a jack is a lifting device.. the stands are there for supporting the weight... anyway loosen the clamp until it is loose/spins freely.. then you should be able to pull the filter out (w/ a bit of force) from the base you might try turning it from side to side and it will come out..
