I'm thinking about rebuilding the bottom end on my ride.
Its getting up there on the mileage and I'm afraid a rod bolt
will let loose or something.
For you guys who have done a rebuild, any suggestions on how much
needs to be done to strengthen it up ? (190,000 mile h22a still pushing 187
whp)
I doubt any bearings have been spun( synthetic oil since new). 10% leakdown across the board. 1 - 1.5 liters oil/3000 miles(5000km)
I was thinking of just changing the rod bolts alone ?

If you want to rebuild your bottom end, just change rods and pistons. When you do that, it's like you have a brand new bottom end. You might need to hone the sleeves a little bit, but thats it. If you really want to get it strengthed up a lot, then get it resleeved from either Golden Eagle or Darton (just to name a few).

You will know if you spin a bering.
New pistons and rods and thats it? Maybe a little bit of a hone? Sorry.....its more than that. You could keep the pistons and rods before anything else. Count on replacing the berings, rod bolts, piston rings, anything that moves, all the seals and gaskets.....
You can get away with a minum rebuild but whats the point if something that you didn't replace breaks anyway?

I'm rebuilding my motor right now... it's all about blueprinting... I'm replacing the main and con rod bearings with new ones, a few new seals... and that's about it. Measure the bolt threads for stretch--if they're OK, then reuse them. Usually there's no reason to replace bolts--the aluminum block or aluminum parts will usually give before the bolt will! If the cyl walls are not scored, and you seem to have a good leakdown... the rings are still good. You might want to clean the ring lands of some carbon deposits though. Examine the pistons for small cracks, see how the head looks. If valves are burnt, replace those. Clean out the oil galleys, what else... there's a lot you can do!

Any ideas of what kind of oil pressure readings I'm going to get if
the engine is fairly worn ? (assuming 10W30 is used)
I should get low oil pressure if my bearings are really worn out.
(I don't have a pressure gauge on the car)
BTW... thanks for all the replies to my first question.

My D16Y8 (just rebuilt and new oil pump) has the following
5w30 Mobil 1
12.5psi Idle
>50 psi >3000rpm
when it gets hot from track it never goes above 50psi.. so I think I might need to use a heavier weight oil.
I think B18 is supposed to run 25 psi at idle

Oil pressure depends on the engine..

I was looking for H22A oil pressure.....thx anyway
