Default Help!!! Tranny is making a whinding noise when driving, SOUNDS almost like a supercharger.

Hello all HT members,

This is my first post since being a member and any info is very much appreciated. I have a tranny situation and wanted to see if anyone has encounter this problem. A couple of years ago I had a 95 Y21 B16 tranny that the differential blew out along with the casing....all the gears were still good so I just left it in my garage collecting dust. I am building a B20/vtec and needed a tranny. I bought a complete 95 s80 tranny with 2nd and 3rd gear bad for $100 and swapped out all the gears from the B16 into the s80 casing. I assemble the tranny together and installed it into my car. Last night I fired the motor up and everything was fine until I drove it. WHEN YOU PUT THE CAR IN 1ST GEAR AND TAKE OFF IT WHINES UP SORT OF SOUNDS LIKE A SUPERCHARGER NOISE. IT DOES THAT TO EVERY GEAR. THE SHIFTING IS FINE, THERE IS NO GRINDS, JUST MAKES A LOUD WHINDING ANNOYING NOISE. I PUT 2 QTS OF HONDA MANUAL TRANNY FUILD. THERE IS NO LEAKS. IF ANYONE HAS ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM PLEASE ADVISE. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED.

THANKS
SHAWN

Tranny bearing noise. Regaurdless you have to pull the tranny. Pull it off and move the mainshaft around. If it has exxessive play its one of the main shaft bearings. Other than that you wont know till you seperate the cases.

i went through this very same thing after changing out all my trans bearings.

it sounds like your going in reverse correct? it's most likely the shim gap between the differential.

bad bearings will have a pennies in a can effect. and if you push the clutch in and it makes the pennies sound possible bad imput shaft bearing. if it make the pennies sound in gear its one of the main shaft bearings.

eitherway the trans will need to be pulled, and have a look at the bearings. if all bearings are good and roll smoothly, and all gears are not chipped then it sounds to me to be the differential shim gap.

i kept driving with the "reverse" sound for months till i sold it (sold it to get a better geared tranny). never lost pull , never came out of gear, and never grinded either.

good luck.
