Default to turbocharge or not to turbocharge? that is the question

ok so i have a d16y7 motor (i know its just plain all out slow). now im thinking of piecing together a turbo kit of my own. or should i just do an engine package swap ive done little research on how to piece together a turbo. i still need to learn a little more. but i only have say 1500dollars to spend. what is everybodys oppinion. if i were to do an engine swap it would be some sort of b16a or a b18c1.if i piece together a turbo i will do a complete kit hand picked, possibly some used parts. what would u guys choose im just looking for around 200hp. thx for any oppinions

$1500 wont get you a swap, even a b16a, or a turbo kit with everything that you need. keep saving homie.

/\ Don't listen to that guy!

I have a buddy with 145whp and 160wtq on a Y7 with a T3 at 6psi and he only spent $1100 on everything, from oil line to Front Mount! You should definitely go turbo! If you do anything, I would stick with D16 slammer! If you blow it up you can have another for $200-$400!

I have a Y8 and I think I have about 180whp at 8psi on a 15g with other mods!

Definitely TURBO!!!!

Turbo NINJA!!!!!!!

to properly run a turbo system you need to upgrade the injectors, fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator, usually the fuel pump, change spark plugs, get a turbo, a good manifold, piping intercooler, oil lines and do quite a bit of drilling and taping and welding.

Tuboing the Y7 is a good way to go. You can start off simple and get the setup you want. Than has you want to go faster crank the boost and add some fuel and you will be all set. Dont let anyone try tell tell you the Y7is a shitty motor. I have a dx coupe with a Y7 with bolt ons and walks all over z6 and y8 motors-Its all in the tune!!

Your logic on the fuel setup is flawed, I only switched to 440cc when i went 10psi and am using all stock fuel system, and i didn't do much drilling, taping, and NO welding. Oh and also i'm running 210whp with a good tune on hondata and no problems. Vtec doesn't really matter too much, i know alot of guys on http://www.turbod16.com that have y7's boosted...you should sign up on the forum if you decide to boost it. I and alot of others are there most of the day helping out with no flaming

budget? find a use HF or STD Manifold, and put a adapter plate on there. (BMCrace, spoolin performance, etc should have it) Then goto the junkyard and get a t3 from a volvo or a saab. t3 .42/.48 is perfect for the D's. Turbo and Manifold for under $250. that's a deal.

HF manifold - $40
Adapter Plate - $30
junkyard T3 - $100-$150

In this situation with your power goals and budget I would say turbo the D. Make sure to do your research on parts and take your time to shop for them so you can ****** the good deals when they come up.

Look at CCFabs manifolds. They're cheap and they're good. I was thinking about getting either his "Chuck Norris" or EL Ramhorn, but I'm going to be making my own.

Hell, if you're on a super budget look at what this guy did: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1564066

I'm running a small TD04 14G turbo @ 15psi. Semi-street tuend on Crome and I'm running 13.7 @ a little over 100mph in the 1/4. That's with a bad axle, blown turbo, and $35 crappy street tires.

If you look in the FI classifieds you can probably find a used Greddy kit for around $800.

NerdSports is putting down 273whp (I think) on a stock internaled D series.

Yup i'm buying a ramhorn from josh(ccfab) aka hotrex. Once the GT2871r arrives i'll be @ 320whp instead of 210....wow what a difference that's gonna be. the size of your turbo will dictate lag and top end. I'm running a t3/O4E and it lags a little in the low end, but man it pulls to 7800 like nothing and wants more.
*edit* just try for something ball bearing...it makes a world of difference in spool time.
