Default Alternator Problems

Has anybody has any on their R's? Mines a 2000 w/ only 19K kms on it.
On the weekend, I'm sitting at a light and my speedo goes crazy and my car starts revving all funny. By night all my lights inside and out are flickering on and off. I pull over turn the car off and it won't start. I let it sit for like 20 mins and it starts but all the lights are still going nuts. I've already changed my battery once because I don't drive my car during the week and by the weekend the battery is almost dead. I still don't know what's drawing current when my car is off. But after all the jump starts I think my alternator has had it. Any thoughts?

I'd take it to the dealer and let them deal with it!

What other alarms, and the like might be drawing the battery down ... time for a trickle charger?

I have a feeling the dealer won't cover it do to all my mods. They'll come up with some excuse and not fix it.

What modifications have you done recently...before you had problems?

well my battery's been dying on and off when I'm away for work. I always have to jump it... i'm guessing it's my stereo system that's doing it but i haven't been able to nail down the problem yet. I've already changed my battery once cause my first one just stopped holding a charge i have a feeling this new ones gonna go soon..

Does your car die while you are driving it?
If it does, then it is probably your alternator.
Your gauges going crazy and the flickering of the gauges are probably the warning signs you see just minutes before the car dies, right? If so, this is more than likely the alternator.

Honda's have very weak alternators with little in the way of "excess power" - they were built and designed to run the car - not some big *** stereo.

It sounds like you have an electrical problem that is related to your stereo. How many amps to you have? What kind of current load are they drawing?

I would upgrade the alternator if you are going to replace it.

check the fuse of the alternator under your dash. that fuse take care of all the speedo, light and so on. if that fuse blown, then better check where is the short.

to check the alternator, get a voltmeter. with the car off, check the battery voltage. should be approx. 13-13.5volts. now start the car and with it at idle or a little above, the voltage should read approx. 14-14.5 volts. keep all the other electrical stuff off in the car. voltage readings should be steady with no wild dips. if you start the car and the voltage stays the same as the original battery voltage, your alternator is most likely bad. have the dealer look it over and see if they'll cover it or not. can't hurt. good luck.

How do the underdrive pulleys affect the reliability of an alternator?

They will prevent the alternator from producing current at idle, since it will be turning at too low an RPM to work.

V. - who's ITR runs on the battery at idle.
