Default V-Tec WAYS TO TELL IF WORKS????? not sure if its working

I just hooked up vtech... cant really tell if its working... I know the car goes alot faster now but cant hear it hit or engauge. Some here say you should be able to hear it or know when its working.

fyi. takes off like a beast in first which didnt before without vtec

92 hatch w/gsr swap/intake/headers/stock muffler

help on

I just want to know if its working or I wired it wrong.

or im expecting to much from vtec and wanting every gear to feel like first?

thanks for the help in advance!

o, Since I have a gsr swap and have vtec with a p28 can I rev it to 8k instead of 7k redline which is on my ex cluster without harming the engine?

You might not hear it with a stock muffler. Driving stock GSRs, I can't hear VTEC engage. Yeah, you might be expecting too much. Unless you have a CEL, then your VTEC is working. The GSR redline is 8000 rpms, which you can take it up there even though the redline on the cluster is at 7200 rpms. The cluster does not affect the performance of the engine.

quick ez way to tell is to launch, floor it in 1st, around 4800 RPM's I htink it is, when the vtec selenoid initiates, you'll see ur oil pressure guage jump down a little (the vtec system uses more oil), you can see the same thing regardless of the gear, so try it in 2nd where the RPM's don't go up as fast

You should be able to hear it with an intake..Even though gsr motors have that dual plenum manifold making it alittle queiter then the rest..

run it open header real quick and you will hear the vtec for sure. if you arent throwing any codes, then vtec is working

is your p28 running a stock p28 program? if so vtec is engaging really low and you wouldn't hear it, and the fuel maps are probably so lean its harming your engine. no offense, but it dosn't seem like you have a clue what you're talking about, what does the redline on the gauge cluster have to do with the engine's redline? if you don't know what you're doing, have someone else do the work for you, or do more research before you break something and waste yer money

I do know what im doing... maybe some have read what i wrote wrong or I didnt explain it cleary..... I know I can rev it to 8k but though I ask.... did I aready no biggie. As for the ecu its a stock p28, please give more info. I know people with k20s and type r swaps, so I doubt im going brake something without knowing.

also, Iam throwing a code a 2 or 1 i believe the cel would go on and turn off for a bit than turn back on and stay on.

Thanks for help guys

Think about it for a minute..You have stock p28 ecu on a B18c..1.6L sohc vtec ecu running a 1.8L dohc vtec,,Very stupid..THe timing and fuel maps are off and you're probably running lean,,You have to chip it with a prgram that has B18c timing and fuel maps to run perfect,,And a p28 ecu cant control the butterflies on the B18c gsr intake manifold..And vtec wont kick in when the check engine light is on..

wtf stock p28 on a gsr motor? you cant rev past 7200rpm cause that ecu is stock. only way you could redline it at 8Krpm, is to chip the ecu or find a obd1 p72 ecu.

lol... you guys are the best. "drive in a tunnel at 120mph and stick your head out the window"

i suggest using an oil pressure guage on the vtec oil port on the head. then will know for sure whether it is working, and no need to try and listen.

Check and see if your VTEC is getting unemployement, then you'll know if it's working

I think theres a way to hook up a light to the vtec solenoid that comes on at given vtec rpm. I'd bet you could find it with an internet search.

stock P28 ecu running a GSR motor...thats good
Before you worry about how hard your MaddD vtaCK is hitting I would get the proper ecu or at least chip that P28 to run a 1.8L DOHC motor

that would only tell him if the vtec solenoid is getting power. the only way to properly tell if vtec is working properly is with the oil pressure guage directly on the cyl head.

I know its not good to run a p28 but though I try to see if I hooked up my vtec correct, Im getting it chip tommow. I though I ask here first before asking my buddies, but the answers Im getting here. Im better off asking them, maybe they are less of dicks .

Thanks to those who answer my questions.

heres an ez way to hear it but you gotta know at what rpm it kicks in. open the hood and rev the car up slowly until you hear a slight pop and then a whining sound thats vtec. i dunno but it works for me i do it for fun.

^^ You have to be over a certain speed for vtec to engage unless your ECU is chipped or you're using a switch etc. (EDIT: I hope you're joking - pop? whine?)There is no question as to whether or not my vtec is engaging. EVER. You will definately hear the vtec engage on a DOHC.

I think you're suppose to hook up VTECH to the outlet plug and the phone jack.
I also think you have too many headers in one car.
