Built and Boosted D series part 2: Throwing more money in the bottomless pit
Some of you may remember my car:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1296381
And some may remember my build from last year:
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1164462
I spun a bearing pretty bad in that motor at the end of last summer. It basically ended up in me redoing EVERYTHING from scratch. This thread will hopefully keep up with the progress over the next month. I'm still waiting on injectors, my manifold, downpipe and charge pipes. The exterior of the car is also going to be a bit different. I'll get pix of that up when the time comes. So far, I've spent well over 12 hrs wiretucking etc. while the motor has been out. It doesn't look like alot now, but once its in it'll look much better than last year. My hopes are somwehere in the range of 350hp. On with the shitt....
My y8 block had a nice gash down the #4 cyl. wall, so I needed a new block. Thanks to Brett (I have an STD), I ended up with a free z6 block. It's been resurfaced, hot tanked, honed and painted:
The Y8 head is stock, cleaned and milled .010 with a skunk2 cam gear. Its still in the body bag from the machine shop:
The crank was cleaned, micropolished, and balanced along with all the other internals. I didn't balance last year and I think it was one of the downfalls of the build. No effin around this time.
CP pistons instead of crappy vitaras, and I'm still using eagle rods although I killed one last year and had to buy a single one.
Heres a pic of the small stack of stuff I got laying around. I put in ES motor mount bushings, as well as an innovative front drivers side motor mount to replace the one that explodes all the time (pic2). HID's, yellow fogs, and a bunch of random stuff in there too.
OEM and replacement parts consist of: New oil pump, new h20 pump, acl bearings, oem thermostat, new cap and rotor, timing belt, OEM headgasket, a bottom end gasket kit, and a ton of new OEM honda bolts, clips etc...
When all is said and done, this is what will be...
-Z6 block/Y8 head
-Kteller 3" exhaust with test pipe
-CC-fab Ramhorn manifold (waiting for)
-CC-fab 3" downpipe(waiting for)
-CC-fab custom charge pipes flanged for greddy(waiting for)
-Garrett T3/To4e 54 trim .63 AR
-Tial 38mm wastegate, dumptube out of front bumper
-Greddy type RS BOV
-Precision 680's (still need to buy)
-stealthmode turbo lines
-plenty of other stuff that I'll show when it gets goin...
My goal is may 1st. Somehow this will be done before the Carlisle PA auto show....

yea yea...I wish, but people are making this kind of power all day on stock sleeves with no problems.

I got the 54 trim from a freind. Its actually still on his car ( get that **** off tim!)
I went standard bore. For the amount the machine shop wanted to bore, and considering how much I'd already spent, I decided to go standard. If I had more $$ I woulda sleeved and went .020.

nice build, I just ordered my cc-fab mani dp, and ic piping. Maybe I ll post some pics too, but anyway seems like you have a good build going there. What is your expected power level 300+. I see potential here good luck
I remember your last build.
Did you figure out why you spun the bearing? That really sucks, it seems like you just got done with the last engine.
Anyways, good luck with this one

an interesting note -- on our pink car we moved the cam gear all over the place, and no matter what it lost power. we went back to a stock cam gear for max power.
If you are going to spend that kind of money why not start off with a B series block???

Because then you need a b-series tranny.. and a bseries this and that.
For the D.
And this is coming from a guy that has done the D-series build and moved on to a few build Bs.. D's are fun and easy to find stuff for.

Thanks...the reason I have the cam gear is because I'm using a z6 block/ y8 head. From what I've read there is a timing issue using the two that you can fix with an adjustable gear. If not I'll go back to stock. Last year when I did run a y8 head/y8 block, I didn't gain anything from the cam gear no matter what I did. We'll see if it works on this setup.

Yeah its crazy. When you look at the big picture, all the parts for a d series are pretty much the same price as a b series. Its just having the b-series to start with that is the problem. I honestly was just going to rebuild the block and call it a day. I just ended up going alot further.

I will try man...I promise! I have a short list of meets/shows so far, and that was one of the ones I wanted to hit up.

I just re-read your setup - I think you screwed yourself, buddy.
You CAN'T run stock bore CP pistons with stock sleeves, even if they're honed.
Search under "sohc pistons rods". CP pistons are SO accurate that you need to re-sleeve the block if you want to run stock bore (including re-honed stock sleeves).
I'd put those CP's up for sale if I were you, and dish out some $$$ for a 75.5mm bore/hone and 75.5mm pistons. Sorry.

agreed
i had to sell mine- sell them to someone who has a sleeved motor with stock bore.
