need to know once and for all
can a bad input shaft bearing cause grinding of gears? because once in a blue moon my 3rd gear will grind then the next day i will wake up and rev it to 8grand and slam it into 3rd and it will be fine. my input shaft bearing is crap i can hear like woah.
the grinds tend to be much worse when trans fluid is fully warmed up and thinner. cold fluid seems to be enough sometimes to keep it from grinding. change the bearing you are ruining the transmission.

well, when they get bad enough it can cause grinding. I fixed a 97 civic one time that had gotten so bad it popped out of gear, grinded and was almost undrivable. it had about a quarter inch play in the shaft when I wiggled it

The bearing itself can grind, but it won't cause your gears to grind.
