88 tranny different?
I've got a Standard Hatch and I was looking to put in a 5 speed trans but I keep hearing that the 88 is different, something about the splines. Can anyone shed some light onto this subject and tell me what my options are?
either a 200mm clitch pressure plate and flywheel from a 88
or you can use the clutch from a 84-87 2.0 prelude and keep your 212mm clutch thats what i did cuz the 200mm clutch is like practical joke small i wouldint trust it at all

Alright so here's my predicament. Say I could get a DX motor and tranny from another year, oh lets say 90. Could I just replace the flywheel and completely swap the trans without any difficulty or would swapping in the entire motor be a better solution. (All taken into account that I don't have a cherry picker)
it all depends on your year..for example if you have a 88 civic/crx 4 speed you need to find a tranny that is 5 speed from a 88 civic/crx only...but if you have a 89-91 civic/crx you can use any tranny from those years...but if you have a 88 civic/crx and you get a 89-91 civic/crx tranny you need a clutch disk for a 89-91 civic/crx for the tranny to work.

correction, the '88's don't use a 200mm clutch disc, they use a 190mm disc, only the '89's use the 200mm disc, the '90-2000 are all the same size. the '88 trannys use a 21 spline input shaft. So to get an '88 tranny in your car you must also use a 21 spline clutch disc and absolutely must have a flywheel from either an '88 or '89 because the bolt pattern is smaller for the pressure plates. now like previously stated you could use a '90+ flywheel, 90+ Pressure plate and a '87 Prelude Si (must be Si) clutch disc then you will have a 21 spline setup that is 210mm. i just put an '88 Si tranny with a brand spanking new oem Exedy clutch kit in my car for an '88 this weekend and i wish i put the bigger clutch combo in because it slips slightly when going into 2nd really hard and i only have a '95 D15b7 in my Hf. good luck
Alright, so from what I'm understanding I've got a 90 motor and tranny laying around and if I pull the flywheel, clutch disc, and pressure plate from the 90 along with the rest of the transmission I should be good to go?
I grabbed the flywheel off of my 93 engine and put that on my 89 transmission. All flywheels from 90-00 are the same, and combined with a 90-00 clutch will work with all transmission from 89-00.
So, yes.
So, yes.
according to this flow chart, since i have a 88 trans on a 91 si, i need the 88 clutch and the 88 flywheel also?
i knew i needed the clutch, but why do i need a new flywheel if the one i have is already bigger than the one that came on the 88? is the contact area on the 88 different from everything else because of the 12mm radius difference?

the 88-89 pressure plate will not bolt to a 90-91 flywheel - different diameter bolt circle - if you have the 90-91 flywheel you could use the 90-91 pressure plate and use the clutch disc from 87 Accord

very good info. thank you
I think what i will be doing is getting an ACT or Exedy clutch and then getting a 88 9lb flywheel also. just to keep everything uniform. i was hoping that i could just use the 91 flywheel.. but im glad i found out before hand.
