Total noob.
Hey guys, I have been lurking here for quite some time, but this is my first post.
I guess I should warn you guys, I am only fifteen(turn sixteen in forty days), but I am dead set on getting a crx. I don't even have my permit yet but I know this is the car I am GOING to have. I realise that with a fifteen or more year old car that it will be expensive, and that many problems will likely pop up. but I am absolutely in love with the crx and I must have one. Any advice?

Welcome.. You're a lot like the rest of us.. Knew your first car had to be a CRX but not sure where to begin. Its pretty easy to do the basic research before getting your first rex. Basic things like what model, weight, and basic repair issues that all old crxes share. I ended up going for a black 89 Si as my first CRX and 3 years later I'm still in love. I think the best advice I can offer up is try to buy a car from a driver who seems like a mature and responsible person
yea... get a helms manual and a couple of tool from your local parts store (screw drivers, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19mm sockets, ratchet, and wrenches) you will need them
and its a good thing you found us when you did... please dont rice out the car, i did when i was your age and i regret it still today, i spent more time de-riceing than driving

Rice? never! If there is one thing I've learned from you guys( I've been lurking for probly over a year) it's that stock looks best!
thanks for the input. I'm really hoping to find an si with no rust, which is kinda doubtful since I live in KY

Rust on non-replaceable panels is the biggest thing to avoid. You will thank yourself for waiting & seeking the least cancerous rex you can find, even if you pay a little more for it. You can - and probably will - fix and replace every other thing on the car. But rust is a bitch, plain and simple.

to be honest. you would be far better off not getting into fixing up a Honda. you will only lose money. better to use your time on something that will make you money. In case you do not listen to that advice, Get a Job start saving cash. never buy a car at night... They always look better at night. Do not buy the first car you drive. Don't buy somebody elses unfinished project. It a unmolested car and just drive it and have fun. Get the newest year CRX with the lowest miles that you can afford. Do not get a HX you will hate it stock. I'd look for a SI that is in good shape. If you decide to mod it, it will be alot easier to start with a SI and I like the moon roof. Other than that Don't waste your time and money on a 15 year old honda. get something that you can just drive... you have a lot to learn.

TRUE THAT!!! That thing is awesome. (I have a Chilton's, it's essentially the same thing.) I keep almost posting threads asking what to do and then I remember, oh yeah, I have a Chilton's!

Is that common thought or just for you?

the curse is real. everytime i fix a noise another one presents itself. i am now dealing with a loud squeaking noise from what seems like the right front suspension.
Very good choice.. I made the mistake of buying a 7th gen civic before my Rex, I quickly flopped that car and started on my CRX. IMO it's honda's best chasis
Don't get too excited when you see a moderately clean rex.. look REALLY hard at it.
REALLY hard.
Don't buy a DX, don't buy an automatic. Way too much work and money making it fun, especially on a teenager's budget.
But patience is really a big thing, and difficult to come by at our age. I'm 17. My swap isn't going to be ready until this summer, and it's miserable waiting for the cash to get going on it. I know it's going to be worth it but I still don't wanna wait. So be patient, and don't buy the first car you look at, and wait until you find a really nice one.

Maybe he just wants to roll around and lightly mod a sweet car.
Nothing is wrong with that an i/h/e autod rex might be slower then **** on a cold day but if thats what he wants he should go for it.
Also level 10 could help him in the tranny area
Don't mind me I just have this auto thing going on lately....

Yeah, I know a fifteen year old car is a horrible investment. With that said I deffinately am looking for an SI, but it seems there aren't any near where I live. I might have to look down south.
you've been lurking for over a year? your account is only 28 days old lol. you'd be surprised how good of an investment an older car will be. mines 16 years old and it runs like new, bone stock. all i need is a valve adjustment. imo our cars are a dying breed. the market is growing smaller for parts. none the less i would never dream of getting rid of my hatch. other ppl like there cars. anyone will admit that the new gens are nicer...so we must LOVE our cars to keep them. good choice man. dont sweat gettin your car before your leicense... i still cant drive mine legally for about 4 months.
haaaaaa......yesss, no power stearing........you get used to it.....plus, the girls at school will like ur huge arms....cause of the no power stearing.....lol......jk. anyway. my hatch was my 2nd car and i still have it. to me....i like the old skool hondas.....i also love anything and everything about the jdm/edm style......i am curently working on my 13b rotary car but its an old skool rx7.......i will allways put honda first and i have no intensions of selling my ef.....
well best of luck.......

I contemplated buying a car with my own money for a long time, but then decided against it. Even if you get a CRX in good shape, I guarantee there's gonna be something that needs fixing almost immediately (repairs = $). Unless your parents are paying for all of it (insurance, repairs, tax, registration, etc, etc), and you have a lot of time on your hands, I would advise against this expidenture (sp?). What satisfied my craving for having a source of transportation that I could tool around with is my motorcycle. A descent 70s japanese motorcycle can be really fun, and you can learn a lot from restoring it/maintaining it. Insurance for my 76 Yamaha XS500 is only $157 annually, and I paid less than $500 for it altogether. It's also pretty quick, fuel efficient, and gets attention from the girlies.
Just my $.02

But is it hard not having power steering?
