Default Installing Volt Gauge on 4th Gen.

Since I was in a wreck, I'm rebuilding my lude. I'm going to install a Volt Gauge cause I had to replace a ton of electrical stuff cause the wreck sliced up a ton of wires. So, I was told to put a volt gauge to make sure I'm getting good power out of my batt and all. I was wondering if any of you guys could give me a detailed installation to go by. I've searched and have seen to just ground the negative and hook the positive to the lighter? I'm kind of confused on that part. As for the gauge turning on when I turn my lights on, I can't figure that out. I would really appreciate any details you guys could give me!

Get the power direclty from the battery. Hook the power up to a switch - because this way yo'll get the correct battery voltage. The wire on the cig lighter could have some corrosion somewhere.
