drilled out cat... prolly shouldnt have
I have a 00 prelude (i think it has an H22a4 but im such a noob with cars)
I decided I couldnt wait till I can get my new high flow cat (I already put on I/H/muffler and custom 2.25" exhaust piping behind the resonator) and decided to drill it out...
Well my check engine light came on after about 20 miles and continued to do so no matter how many times i reset the sensors. I didnt want my car to be in limp mode so I took out the sensor thats behind the cat and taped it up to my underbody cause when i completely remove it the check engine light stays light.
Im thinkin the sensor must read airflow too because some reading that its getting is causing me to lose power... i would think o2 lvels and temp would be pretty much optimal if it was taken out of hte cat...
So I have two questions if anyone feels like helpin me out (ppl at honda-acura.net just bitch at me for bein a dumbass and hollowing out my cat... and I agree I shouldnt have done all that with no clue what i was doin but I had no clue what I was doing when I put everything else on and so far havent had any problems)
1. is there anything I can do with the current setup to get the ECU to stop takin away my power
2. is the makeshift exhaust piping i put on hurting anything? i duno maybe backforce or something else? all it is is a 2" to 2.25" adapter behind the resonator, a 2.25"pipe going straight back (decided not to curve it around like honda did), a 45 degree elbow, another 2.25" pipe, and another adapter that goes into my muffler...
exhaust has been leaking out around the seems of one of the adapters but I just resealed everything tonite so it should be good...
anyways thx for whatever help u wana give me... ppl here know a hell of a lot more than i do but im learning
if u help me out ill honor u in my victory speech when I build the winning le mans car

whats an o2 simulator and where do I get one?
does it just give the ecu fake readings to make it think my exhaust is normal?
i dont have a lot to spend right now (obviously if my idea of modding my car is putting some pipes together and drilling out my cat) how much would it cost?

I mean my check engine light isnt even on now that I took out the sensor...
Does this mean nothings wrong and Im just paranoid that the ECU is cuttin back?
Or should I still get that sensor bypass thing off of ebay?

your 00 prelude has 2 o2 sensors, a primary sensor and a secondary sensor. your primary sensor (which is located on the header) detects air/feul ratio. the secondary sensor (located on the cat) detects whether the cat is working properly. since you drilled out the cat, the sensor is detecting that something is wrong, and when you removed the sensor couldn't detect the cat at all. you car has an obd-2 ecu (if you don't know what obd is then you can search it for more details) which requires a secondary sensor, unlike the obd-1 preludes that do not require a secondary sensor. swapping the ecu for an earlier one is very common and there is plenty of info out there to tell you how to do it. then there are o2 sensor simulators. these can trick the ecu into thinking that the secondary sensor is still plugged in and working fine, although i have read that these do not always work right and the CEL can still come on, and you will not pass emissions.
so here are your options to get rid of the CEL:
1. get a new cat
2. get an obd-1 ecu and conversion herness
3. get a secondary o2 sensor simulator

whyd you upgrade your ecu? was it for the reasons u just stated?
will either of those ecus give better timings/mixtures than my current one? which one of those two ecus will give me a faster quarter mile time? i know damn well i havent done close to enough work on my car to hit 120 so im guessing the jdm... that one might save my *** one day too...
i think my current ecu lets me get up to like 135... i was goin down a hill when i hit that tho
also... would it be easy to chip or reprogram it or would i need to take it to a tuner? if so any suggestions on where to go, i live in the dc area.. thx

honestly the air/feul mixtures and ignition maps of the 2 are probably the same, but if there is a difference it won't be enough to affect 1/4 mile times. and as for chip, you can technically take the ecu apart and install the chip yourself if you know what you're doing. but any chip that you can install yourself without tuning, is not a chip worth getting. if you do end up getting a chip (i would stick with a stock ecu if you're low on $), get a crome chip, take it to a shop, and have them install and tune it.

some states won't let you pass emissions with an obd-1 ecu in an obd-2 car.
just get a new hi flow cat. it's the cheapest option, it's the most socially responsible action--dumping extra poisonous fumes in your communities air sucks for everyone.

The JDM ecu will help out your 1/4 mile because the higher redline lets you start further up in the powerband after each shift. I think that there is a differance in the timing or fule because the powerband in the low end ( around 3000rpm) was noticeably smoother.
I could realy use the money but a god highflow cat would be the most responsable solution.
