My son's pinewood derby car.

Well this is what he asked for.
It is only primed now. Tires are only temp. mounted.
I have more sanding and then I am going to have him paint it.
Have to keep the monster truck stance in order to clear the track.
I was going to continue shaping it, but then I came to the realization that it already looks like nothing a 7 year old could make.
He says he wants to paint it red, I told him to pick his favorite color.
So far it is still red.
Have to wait and see if he wants a fake CF hood or not.
Anyway I figured some of you might appriciate this.
It is not a kit. I had to glue extra wood on the block they give you to make it large enough and then shape the entire block. The kits still look the same as they did when we were kids.
They are propelled by gravity. No motor allowed.
There is a raised section in the middle of the track that makes up the lanes.
Slot cars have a pin to keep them on track.
These just use the wheels to do the job.
I was going to go crazy with the detail, but I want to have him help a little.
At 7 he can't work a saw, but I figure he can use a spray can.

Spray the axles with old english furniture polish and use a threaded tap in the center of the wheels to reduce rolling resistance and that thing will fly down the track.

LOTS of polishing on the axles, and making sure you remove any burrs on them will help a ton. I used a peice of cotton and graphite to polish mine after I made them perfectly flat with a file. Just chuck the axle into a drill. Also, see if you can make it so it goes down the track on only 3 wheels as long as your rules allow it. Most places don't allow the wheels to be inside the body. All depends on what they let you do.
The car looks good. I always just cut mine into a wedge and moved the wheels to the far edges of it. Worked great for winning the races, but never got chosen for the best car.

Thanks for all the tips.
I was thinking I could set one rr tire a little high so it would not touch to reduce rolling resistance a little. The other tips will help also. There are some big parting lines on the nails for the axles. As suggested polishing those should make a big diff.
I will post up the finished pics as requested. For the paint I am trying to just let him go, so it may not be pristine.
One of those GT2 wings would help with aerodynamics as well, right?

I respect the comment about the father doing all the work.
This year he is only 7 and it is his first year.
He is really to young to use a knife or saw.
I am having him sand and paint it.
Next year he will basically be on his own with a little guidance.
