highway speed at lower RPM
is there anyway to do this without getting a new engine or tranny.. i don't want to be able to do like 150 mph or anything like that, i just want to do like 80mph at a lower rpm to save gas. Is there anything i can do to help with this?
No way. Not without changing tranny. Then if you had taller gears in the tranny, you would have to boost the engine, to have the power to turn it.
The only method for what you want to do, is to mount larger diameter tires than what it has now. Theory?
Larger Diameter = further travel per revolution (circumference is longer)
But this a just about unusable, since the size of the tires are limited by the physical constraints of both the suspension and body sheet metal proximity.
The correct way to do it is to find a transmission with a numerically lower final drive ratio. 4.22:1 as opposed to 4.88:1 (as an example)

You can lift the car some, and get some really, really tall tires. But I wouldn't advise it...
The Accord's gears are pretty much the longest you're going to find that will bolt up to your motor. The only advice I can give you is, since you want to save gas, slow down to 70. It makes a big difference.
EDIT: Damn you P_Adams, you beat me to it.

haha. i don't always do 80.. its just usually when i head to mass from ct. i don't want to do 65-70 there the whole way.
If i got taller gears.. and boosted the engine.. i would also have a higher top speed correct? Which tranny has the higher gears?

the ones already in the car.....
AV6 trans has even taller gears but the I4 cannot handle it without luging the engine..... less than 2250rpm at 70 = sweet The only engines that can handle extremely tall gears are diesels and that has everything to do with torque

This is what you've got in the car (assuming it's a '96 LX auto):
1994-1997 Honda Accord DX/LX/EX coupe/sedan automatic F22B1/2 Code = A0YA
1st - 2.736 2nd - 1.483 3d - 1.026 4th - 0.674 / FD = 4.133 USDM
This is most likely what you've got in the car (asuming it's a '96 LX <U>manual</U>)
1994-1997 Honda Accord DX/LX coupe/sedan manual F22B2 T/Code = P2A5
1st - 3.307 2nd - 1.809 3d - 1.185 4th - 0.903 5th - 0.685 / FD = 4.062 USDM
There is not an Automatic Trans available with a lower FD Ratio than what you've got for the fifth gen. You'd have to go to a manual

yes it is an auto. I would maybe swap out the auto to a manual if it'd make a bigger difference for highway speeds. it just seems that 3500+ rpms is high for doing highway speeds. My mothers odyssey does like 100 mph at like 2500 rpm. I know the odyssey is a v-6 but its so much nicer at highway speeds. My auto trans. is shifting hard, i prob have to change the fluid since its never been changed with 107k on it, but i like driving my friends 5 spds. How much of a difference would it make to do a swap?
