that really depends where you live. I see you live in Nazifornia, so they'll make it really difficult for you.
there is a federal law that most states do not enforce which says that any motor swapped into a vechicle must be the same year or newer than the vehicle it's being swapped into. Cali does check this.
I think if you can prove that you purchased the motor legally, it is as new or newer than the car it's going into, and all smog equipment is still in place and functional, that you can do it. You may have to bend over backwards to please the cali SS squad tho.

Official response from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation: "Who Cares? We're not about to publish Photo Albums of Engine Mug Shots for the occasional Roadside Inspectors, so who's to know? As long as it passes the emissions inspection test.....")
Although those living on the Left Coast certainly seem to march (or at least listen) to a different drummer; what with C.A.R.B. and C.H.I.P. I wouldn't be surprised to hear of roadside stops with D.O.T. inspectors going over cars with engine mug shots followed up with forensic teams crawling all over the car looking for disabled smog equipment. Welcome to the People's Republic.

If they were illegal, I don't think swapping would be as popular as it is. I think the problems lies in being if you swap in a obdII and its not done right. but the obdI's are fairly drop and go. But yeah Cali is very strict on modified cars. I feel for you fellas out there.

I like kentucky. No Echeck so inspection no nothing for cars just pay registration and keep insurance on it.
Here I could run a straight pipe with no egr at all and the state would never know or care if they did.

alright so heres another question, now that i got a h22a (the prelude type s one)
what would u suggest i did so i passed smog and not get screwed over, and pass the visual and everything else?

we pay a penalty in the inflated cost of living here, but its cool wearing shorts all yr round. and we have long beach/LA habor w/ vast amount of vendors as well.
can a jdm motor pass CA smog? yes
can a jdm motor get BAR'd? very difficult
most pigs that will ask you to pop the hood they will look for intake, header, turbo, ect. if they see a valve cover that says HONDA DOHC VTEC do you really think they will know that it didnt come in the car? only if they really know their ****

You're also forgetting that in CA, the motor has to be SOLD in the US. You can put a '96 USDM Prelude H22 motor into a '95 Accord but you can't put a '96 JDM H22A in the same '95 accord. I've spoken to a ref at my school and that is what he said.

And that's the shitty part about it. I even asked if I could get a fully rebuilt '94 USDM H22A ("brand new") and put it into my '95 and he said that wouldn't even get REF'ed.
Plus with all the bastards out there that have some nasty polluting exhausts (much more than ours) and they don't get hassled yet anything that's not domestic gets crap from the authorities.

hey man.. u sure it has to be sold... the latest ive been hearing is that u can put in a jdm prelude into a accord as long as you pass smog

listen dude, here some pointer for you
-jdm or not, you can't put a older motor in a newer car(97h22a in 2000 accord)
-it will not pass visual inspection unless you have all the paperwork done and get it bar'd, again, it's a sh-t load of work
-california cops are instructed to check for vin and all the id part.
due to the higher percentage of honda getting jacked, last time i was pulled over, the poo poo checked the vin(dash, bay), tranny, motor, and he rub his hand on the number to feed the letter.
-if you decide still going for it, make sure you have all the receipt with you all the time. if you got some jacked sh-t, if the cop pull you over and found out(easy, they know where to check for the stamped number, any sanded off number would be automatic impound) that the part do not match and you don't have legit paper work for it, it's for the poo poo to keep.

that analogy doesn't even remotely work. maybe in cali things are jacked up but i am speaking in general. cops elsewhere care less whats under your hood unless your running open exhaust.

I see alot of you guys talk harshly about California smog laws but wake up! These laws are going to be country wide soon. Take the time to study what type and year engine you want to swap. Make sure mods are approved and you have your exemption stickers. Most smog test techs are not going to recognize JDM engines if all devices and exemptions are preasent
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by greenc51 »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">so jdm motors can pass smog checks? since my 97 has obd2, i don't really get smogged, they just scan the obd...so if i drop in another ob2 motor, will all be well for me?</TD></TR></TABLE>
Yes, it will work. When the state tests OBD2 vehicles here, they actually go straight to the diagnostic terminal and interrogate the ECM. If the ECM reports no issues, you get your sticker.
Now, by inference; if I was to (Hypothetically) swap in an OBD1 H22 into a '97 SE and change it over to OBD2, (and everything worked as designed) It would pass inspection..... If I did that

yep but depending on the state's smog requirements you might have to use a 1996 USDM p13 ECU that does not have the immobilizer and those are very rare and cost an arm and a leg. i heard here in cali if you plug in a jdm obd2 ecu to the scanner it automatically fails because its not USDM.

if anyone can answer this question i would really appriciate it (in detailed)
if i was to put a jdm prelude type s motor (h22a hp:220 97+) into a 96 accord, what would i have to do to make it pass? would i have to change certian parts, put in a usdm prelude ecu in? new parts? (jdm parts considered after market? sucha as the intake manifold?)
thanks for all the posts guys

In texas, anything can be passed..sadly
Theres tons of shops that will test a new car from the ealry 2000, and put your information on the slip and give you the sticker aswell, and you get to drive away for like 50 bucks more..test $45.00 aswell the underhand 50 you give.((AND 100% legal exp.. if cop pulled you over he'll run your sticker and come out leget.))
the bad is HOUSTON... is like a city of SMOG..We have some days of the summer when its a warning to stay inside your home. Once you go outside you smell like the houston sun (exp. dog sent)and most people have issues breathing on these days.
Cops in houston dont go too much into specs. Only if your car is "riced out" then you get problems.
all i got to say think of the young children and there olders.
