Need opinions on sunroof delima.
Im going to be gettin my CRX painted sometime soon. The sunroof on it now is gettin in real bad shape. Im torn between gettin that carbon fiber plug and get rid of that weight up top since my sunroof only works when it wants to. Or, I can have a shop throw in an aluminum sheet in there and never have it rust again. Carbon plug: http://www.lighterfaster.com/4436/index.html
Thoughts in my head.....
--Loose weight up top and have a carbon fiber plug stick out like a sore thumb being the only thing carbon fiber on the car and people thinking I have something black on my roof. (the paint is going to be professional and Im throwing on a JDM front. thats why Im worried about the carbon fiber not flowing.)
--Keep the stock looking roofline with a sunroof that works sometimes and keeping that awful up heigh weight.
Argh, I dont know what to do. Any opinions on this would help me out bigtime. I dont know what I want to do. Anyone run the CF plug and notice a difference? Any bad experiences with a CF plug? Im just trying to get some ideas to help me decide.
Thanks
Matt

Call me stupid if I am wrong but would any type of body roll or flex eventually cause the carbon fiber to warp or anything? I am not an expert on physics and such so I don't know how much happens up top, but I am just curious also.
just get a fiberglass fill piece that is like $80 and have it painted to match. or you can get the lexan filler piece that is $180. just some more options
Ya, I was thinking of painting over the carbon fiber, but there is a seal that surrounds the plug. I dont think that would look right.
And good call on the flexing and warping square 1, didnt think of that.

why would you paint the carbon plug
if your gonna paint it just get the fiberglass filler and save your self $230. fill in the small gap with some bondo or something, sand and paint

Instead of spending money on a plug, spend it on making the roof work correctly and look good again. I wouldn't worry too much about the weight. Is this a track car or a driver? Working sunroofs are always cool.
This is going to be my daily driver, but I still like to throw her around in the corners. I would think the bondo would crack after time and many corners with the roof flexing and twisting.
Thanks for the comments guys.

While I think I may have fixed it again for the time being, my moonroof is probably going to start leaking again at some point, so a more perminant solution would be nice. It's one of those tacky dealer installed units, something I'd gladly be rid of.
I know nothing of welding. How would one go about getting some new metal in there?

if your planning to get rid of the sunroof. i say go with a WHOLE non sunroof top. from the dealership. which runs about 250.
reinforce the car. drill out all the spot welds on your roof. and put this new roof over and weld her on. and seal it up. it has been done here on h-t. by an old memeber on here before(crx v-t?). a body shop with the right tools would be able to do this.
i've done the plexiglass roof. and it cracked at all the places i bolt it down.
because the car flexs ALOT with out any reinforcement up there.
i imagine the CF plug will take a quite a bit of flexing. but its a vary thin piece of cf. and the felxing would probaly spring a leak between the seal and the plug. and the price is outragous.
in the end. if your going to do it right. just do the oem non sunroof top. that plug **** is wack.

I had the same dilemma as you - my CRX is in the body shop right now, and I didn't want to repaint my rusted sunroof panel because I knew the rust would come back.
I didn't want to do the cf plug because I wanted to keep my sunroof - plus I don't like the look of all the rivets holding the plug in place. Anyway, I ended up finding a carbon fiber sunroof panel online (made by arospeed) that is a direct replacement. Not sure how it's going to look yet - I also got the JDM front end conversion done and am getting a complete repaint.
If you want, I can post pics and you can see what you think.
