i have jus borrow my friends timing gun and im not sure on how to use it. he helped me time my dizzy and now i have to redo my timing belt cuz it was put on wrong. ( owner before me) so it will probly need timing. what degrees do i advance it to? 15?
89 crx with sohc zc with pm6 ecu.

ok, hook it up to your battery so it gets power, then hook the wire with the clip to the #1 cylinder. then aim it directly at your eye to see if it works, now if you are not blind and can see aim it at the crank pulley, if im not mistaken if the light is set at 0 then it the white line should line up with the mark on the timing cover, with it set at 16 degrees it should line up with the red mark on the timing cover(most hondas are 16 degrees btdc im not sure about your motor) . if marks dont align then adjust dizzy till it does, also make sure your motor is completely warmed up and the fan has kicked on at least once and the clip under the dash or in the engine bay has a paperclip in it

 

so i should set mines at 16?

 

the manual says for a d16a6 that 18 degrees is stock setting. i dont know what it is for a zc.

 

what about if you dont have a timing belt cover?

 

Also what about the jumper plug on the fender? I think it's a yellow plug and it needs a paper clip put in it.
Anyone?

when do i press the trigger on the gun? this is the first time i have had it in my hands. i have no idea on how to use. i have to put a paper clip in something? i didnt see my friend do that part. well he only set the dizzy maybe thats y.

 

First read this post.

if there is a ground clamp, clamp it to the chassis not the battery. also, for the paper clip, first let your car warm up with nothing on (lights, heater whatever). once warm, turn the car off and hook up the timing gun. put a paper clip into jumper on the harness. start the car. point the gun at the timing belt and measure for timing. there is a little pointer on the middle part of the timing cover. Use that along with the pointer on the bottem of the timing cover to accuratly time the car. once done, loosen the bolts on the distributor. Notice how i said loosen them not take them off. push the light and rotate the distributor either way to adjust timing. Once timing is set, tighten the bolts up on the distributor. turn the car off, and unplug the jumper. pull the battery terminal cable for about 5 min then reattach it. start the car up again and recheck timing. it should be fine. Also, if the gun has a **** on the end of it to adjust timing, leave it at zero.

You cannot time it since the cover makes a shadow, so the light checks the shadow (rotation) to time your belt.

 

Also , if you take a piece of white chalk and mark the crank pulley on the notch, it wil make it alot easier to see with the timing gun.
