making the long story short. just rebuild a motor that i bought from the wreckers. however it didnt come with a dizzy so im using one off a car a year older. both obd1. so i installed the dizzy and the car fired up. however when the timing was at 0* so i tried to advance it to 16* where it should be but the bolts would only go to about 13*. it wont go any further. so my i obvuisly am misssing something. should i have aligned #1 at tdc and put the dizzy in the middle so i can turn it ither so left or right equal amounts depending on the amount i need to correct the timing. or does anyone know whats happening here? thank

 

if you cant get the ignition timing to 16° you are off on the cam timing. the dizzy only bolts on one way, so you cant mess that up. no need to find TDC unless you pulled the timing belt.

 

what are you talking about cam timing? as long as the timing belt is on right which it is, there is no other way to set the timing of your cams unless you have adjustable cam gears which i dont.

so does anyone know whats going on here. im going to reset the ecu and jump it this time. maybe that will work but i highly doubt it.

 

lol your gonna have to do the timing belt over. isnt there three hash marks, wich detail 14, 16 , and 18 degrees?

There are a total of 4 marks on the crank pulley. The one that is by itself is the one to set the cam timing. If you used the middle of the other three then the cam is off by 16 degrees. Set the crank to TDC (the single mark) then check the marks on the cam pulley. If they are not right, the timing belt must come off to fix the error.

 

agreed. Sounds like your timing belt is off some.

Redo your timing belt then use the dizzy to dial it in perfect.

 

the timing belt is right. i have done this before. just to double check though because im feeling retarded right now. i just had a thought. im using a b16 crank pulley. would that make a difference? maybe the marks are off a bit?

anyways to check the timing. line up cylinder 1 at tdc. meaning the single mark on the crank pulley is lined up with the dash on the block. have the marks on the cam gears lined up so they are pointing towards each other. put the belt on. now the belt is on and the two cam marks are facing each other. this is aligned right at tdc? im thinking its this b16 crank pully. im going to go check.
