What is my transmission doing ('grinding' noise when in gear and coasting)? Shifter = hard also...

Picked up a 1990 EF CRX (DX). 177k miles, original equip. Did an engine tune up, sounds and runs great. Clutch feels good, but the lower the gear, the worse the roflolroflol roflol (sound the car makes when say doing 20mph, in second, gear engaged, and coasting). I just push the clutch in and hold it in until I need to accelerate again, or put it in neutral. The lower the gear (1,2,3) the worse... barely at 4th and even less at 5th (haven't used fifth much, lots of city/stop and go). Also, my mechanic friend (and his Honda enthusiast) says the shifters is a lot harder to move than it should be. We tried lubing the linkage, which has some rust (I didn't see but neither one freaked out over the amount), but they weren't sure what was making it so difficult.
My main concern is about the trans... I suppose it needs a rebuild, but wanted some experienced input first. Thanks guy.

trans problems are actually kinda hard to diagnose on the comp...but it would help us out if you gave a little more info.. does the sound stop when you push the clutch pedal in? do you know how long ago the clutch was replaced? sounds to me like the infamous input shaft bearing but i wont jump ahead until u give us more info..as for the shifter...go under the car while your friend is in the car..where the linkage meets the bottom of the shifter your gonna see a bolt, loosen that bolt about a quarter turn..see if that helps, alot of times i see ppl make that bolt too tight and they get the same symptoms.. good luck man
Input shaft bearing is bad. Replace immediately, before it fails and destroys the transmission.

Also the sound stops when I am in gear and I am accelerating... only coasting = sound, which almost sounds rotational. Fifth gear = barely there/almost gone
Still the input shaft bearing? Anything else I should replace when opening up the transmission? How should I check for clutch wear? Doesn't slip or stall or have any other problems. I have a Haynes and Chilton on the way (one arrived Thursday night, will see it Friday the 10th of March). Best diagrams?

the 3 main bearings that seem to go in our trannys are 1.throw out bearing 2.pilot bearing 3.input shaft bearing definately check them out if you can rip your tranny out b4 you order anything, i would take a look at the throw out bearing and the pilot bearing first..if they check out ok then go for the input shaft bearing.. since your gonna have the tranny out anyway, i would say replace the clutch assembly usually it comes with a throwout bearing a pilot bearing anyway.. but if you want, the main thing to look for is hotspots on the flywheel, any bent "fingers" on the pressure plate, and just obvious wear on the clutch disk.. anything that looks remotely bad, replace

i would say its ur input shaft bearing. mine does the same thing. coasting u can hear it until i come to a dead stop. u can hear it 1-3rd gear. 4th bearly and not in 5th. i have a new tranny waiting so ima let it jus go. its been like that for 3 months now. still runs good. but u should replace it asap if u dont have a back up

Hey. Releasing that bolt to make the shifting normal makes the awful roflol a lot less, but still there. Helped a lot though.
Will look at doing tranny work next.

Like I said, the bolt made the shifting perfect, but my awful roflol is back.
What's the best way to procure a new transmission? Just got to a yard and pick a random one or two? Lots of work to move those suckers. Should I just open mine up? Never cracked the pumpkin so to speak... will have to have my experienced mechanic with me on that one...

(Where would I get the input shaft bearing?)

not to jack the thread or anything but my rex also makes the same slight grinding/scratching type noise when coasting or at idle but goes away when the clutch is disengaged. Yeah sounds like input shaft bearing would be bad but mine is only a week old, noise started a day after i put the new clutch and bearing in.

Maybe it's one of the other two things listed in this thread... was your input shaft bearing bad? Did it make noise when you moved it?
never had a noise, put it a new clutch and new bearing, old bearing did have play in it but no noise, now new bearing = new noise, dunno why
sorry to bring up a old post, but im having the same problems now and I would like em solved cauze I just dumped alot of $$$ on the tranny and I dont want it to crap out again
its a grinding sound while coasting in gear approx 2800rpm down to about 2300rpms then stops when I depress the clutch and or go below the revs
its a 99 GSR tranny with a brand spankin new clutch and release bearing, also I physically check the flywheel bolts myself and they are tight as per spec so what else could it be?
