Default d-series synchros

how can i tell by looking at the gears in my tranny if the synchros are bad or not, i had this tranny im talking about in my car its an EX tranny from a 98 coupe. and swapped it b/c i couldnt after about a month or so get it into second gear at ALL! it would go every once in a while then finally it quit going in at all. now i have an older dx model tranny in my car that from what i hear when im driving sounds like the main shaft bearing is bad since only about a month ago i replaced the clutch and release bearing. anyway back to my questions ive removed the cover from my tranny which has exposed all the gears and from what i can see everything looks OK.but then again ive never been into a tranny before but im not intimidated by taking it apart. anyway how do the gears go anyone have a diagram? how do i tell if the sychros are bad and also if its not hte syncrho what else could be wrong with this tranny
