Default Alternator/Battery Light

I just bought my sister's 96 hatchback.. it's a CX...
I wanted to see if any of you knew the reason the battery light comes on when I'm sitting there with the car idling without the lights on... when I turn the headlights on.. the light goes away... the battery light is barely noticeable in the day time but when you are sitting there in the dark you can see it dimly lit...not fully lit up like it does when you stall it or first turn the key on. I replaced the battery and the terminals..it's still doing it...I don't want this to cause a problem in the future... BTW..( the gauge cluster is not the original if that matters at all) any ideas?

Do you think a loose connection would cause it? I would have guessed it is a voltage problem because the battery light does work, when the car is idling normal with my stereo on you can barely see the battery light trying to come on..the idle is normal.. I go and turn the headlights on and the barely lit battery light on the cluster goes away..... I'm not very experienced when It comes to hondas tho.
