Yeah only if you drive through a river.........hydrolocking should be the least of your worries
Short ram or CAI?......whichever is cheaper, like someone already said.

I'm not sure if I believe this talk about CAI hydrolocking. Has anybody ever actually seen this happen, or is this story just getting passed from one person to another? I find it really hard to believe that you're goign to pull enough water up a foot off the ground, through a filter and down a 3 foot, 3" diameter pipe to actually get enough into an engine at any one time to cause it to compress enough liquid on one stroke to actually break a rod. I'm sorry, I just dont believe it.
I had an 87 ramcharger back in the day that had a stock intake snorkle that was right at the level of the bumper. I drove through a really deep puddle one day and the snorkle actually got submerged. The motor got starved of air and shut down. I put it in park and pulled the snorkle off of it and moved out. The truck was fine. Let me tell you, if 5.9 liters of V-8 can't suck enough water up a snorkle to hydrolock, I really have a hard time believing a 1.6 liter motor can.

Yes it has happened to me. I bought a ebay cai, and i wasnt driving through a river. the water was probably about 3" deep on the side of the road. before i could get to the inside lane my car shutoff and i blew 2 rods through my block. so yes it can happen

Probobly since the moment someone realized that an intake on a stock DX Dseries is about as legitimate a performance modification as a hot dog...

it has happened many times. Do a search and read about some of them. Although its not likely, it definitely does happen.

Most good CAI have a bypass valve, when full suction is felt it opens and will in theory kill the suction below it. But cheap ones, off of EBAY, dont come with these, and this is where this actually happens.
Most Ebay ones dont come with one atleast, some may.

haha this is particularly funny to me since I just recently had a dream involving my car and a hot dog. Oh, and bologna, but that part of the dream failed miserably.

there are good arguments for each, alot of good information in that thread. Theres also a link to a test done with several of each, cai and sri, with dyno numbers on one of the last pages.
*edit* found the link, http://www.tprmag.com/issue/1/1_intakes.shtml

i drove thru a puddle with my 03 gti and my aem cold air intake, hydrolocked my motor. the threat is real. if you drive somewhere where it rains alot, go ahead buy a cold air intake; but thats just asking for suicide. if you want to drive and never be worried get a short ram
