I am looking for just the expander, not the whole pipe bending machine that comes with one. I am sure someone out there must have made one, having a real hard time finding one... any one know if there is one out there?

Yeah I was hopeing those would work, but it couldn't even expand 18 guage piping **** broke in 2 seconds.

 

Maybe try heating the pipe with a torch before using those.

That’s a very good idea, but the expander in the link above, is held together with heavy duty rubber bands basically, I would think those would melt and the metal things will just fall.

But that would probably work.

I'm sure it doesn't affect the usage if the bands melt, you'll just have to reposition every part by hand when you take the flare tool out because it won't stay together when not in a pipe. Once its in the pipe it doesn't matter if the bands melt. Just get yourself a bag of rubber bands for like 50 cents and replace the bands between each pipe you flare.

ben pearson and a couple of others make a hydraulic unit that can be used with a hand or air over hydraulic pump
The orings that hold the segments together are not a problem and don't melt I have one of these and will get a number for the manufacturer in the am

does it say anything about how thick of tubing u can use this thing on. how thick was the stuff you were using

It comes with 3 dies to do a lot of the sizes between 1 1/2" up to 2 1/2" they sell dies to be able to do 2 1/2" 3 1/2" separately.

I used it on 18 and 16 gauge without a problem.

After talking to you on the phone, I went out to a few muffler shops, they looked at my ss tubing 16ga, and told me they wouldnt expand it. They then gave me a few examples of some broken tooling they had. I then went to another shop, they stuck it in, lubed it up, flipped the lever and CRRRAAAAACK! Their die just busted.

I am honestly considering getting the air unit due to cost, now was it really that bad?

Yeah, most muffler shops don't really work with stainless. I've had a few of the expanders break on me also, but usually only when I put the tube in there at an odd angle, even than it's rare for it to break.

The expander above, broke on me twice, the second time I bought this one (what I was telling you about on the phone):


I have used it heavily for the past 6 months with no problems at all. Its a $1000 more but is worth the money. The little one would struggle to expand the SS (it would but it was a lot of strain I could tell) the new one opens it like butter.

 

were you running it at the maximum recommended air pressure?
