Yep. After you put on the new cat, drive it for about 10 miles on the freeway (60+ mph) to heat up the catalyst. Then get it smogged.

change your spark plugs and 02 sensor. especially if you dont know when that was done last. you may not need a new cat. i would just do the plugs and sensor and oil, and make sure you drive the car to get it (the cat) really hot before you take it into the testing place. THEN get a cat if it doesnt pass.

edit: i didnt notice you were in cali. i dont know if you have only a limited number of times to get it tested, but if you do and can afford to do all of that stuff, then you should. including the cat. good luck

did you do a general tune up?

tune up:
spark plugs
cap
rotor
oil change
o2 sensor
air filter

This should be enough. You could also buy a product called "Never Fail" or "Guaranteed to Pass" i forget whats in it exactly but it will help.
(I think they sell this in Cali.. i dunno for sure though)

thanks for all the help. i think it maybe the cat now. the first time i went to smog, my timing was off so it didnt pass. a week later, i blew the head gasket. so i got that fixed. so now i need a new cat. i didn't do anything thing to the o2 sensor, cap and rotor but did the rest. how much do they usually cost?

cap and rotor from honda are probably like $25 total forboth. i bought an o2 sensor from napa and it was $35. so not too much. just make sure you tighten down the rotor really well..

That is an obdII cat. I wouldn't. It seems everyone here says cat cat cat I say no no. Unless you like to put a band-aid on it then go for it! What makes the cat go bad? Fuel mixture. Change O2 sensor. then cat. Have you had the check engine light come on?

But before that I need a little more info. Do you have an EGR valve?
I also would like to see the rest of the test report. What is your O2 reading? should be 0.0 without an EGR. if it is 0.0 it's not your cat!

And if your HC's are low as in the 10's or 20's you are running lean and that will cause your nox to be up.

My bad cat readings were above 2500ppm's I should say hollowed out cat.
You can get the right cat for your car for under $100 Fix it right

mine failed as well. i am in colorado. the hc and the co was high as expletive. chenged cat, o2, oil, plugs, wires, and oil. (air filter was new) dropped the hc to pass but co was 3.xx and limit was 1.xx. the old cat was the factory one and the honeycomb fell out of it. lucky for me in colo if you fail and spend 200 bucks or more and fail the restest, you get a waiver for 2 years. and i heard that next year they are getting rid of emissions in colo springs where i am.

also other than cat, i noticed in the honda service manual that there is a way to adjust the co. i dont know where this is on the engine. they show a pic in the man, but not any orentation to the motor.
