Three different answers so far.
If you can adjust it with the controller, set it so that you cannot feel it engage. That is where the low lobe torque equals the high lobe torque.

My friend has a stock 92 gs-r..Vtec engages at 5630 rpm everytime..This is using one of those rev meters by apexi..Not sure if they are %100 or not but you get the point ,,
Mine engages at 6K according to both the stock tach and the Autometer tach (using stock ecu). All test procedures for the VTEC system in the Honda repair manual require reving the motor beyond 6000 rpm to check for engagement.
Just my 2 cents.
I agree with the responses above, if you have the opportunity to adjust it then do so. Experiment a bit, but I suspect the ideal spot is going to be in the low to mid 5's (assuming its stock or relatively so).

It's amazing how many people mistake the secondary air intake butterfly's opening at about 5600rpm for the VTEC.
Anyway, I'd like to know the answer for my '95 GS-R. If I reset my Apexi VTEC VAFC, it engages at 5100 default, but is that the same as stock?

just rev it to 8 grand in 1st gear and whatever ur rpm floats at in 2nd gear is what your vtec should be at. about 100rpm below if you take it exactly to redline

your b18c1 is different from a b17. stock for yours is 4400.
