I just bought a car with an unoriginal engine - how to identify it?
I just bought a 1991 civic hatchback, this is my first honda and I don't know much about it. The guy said the engine was changed at some point for a used one, and I'd like to try and figure out what its from just so I know. Is there a vin on the engine somewhere? or a casting number or something that I can use to identify what it is?
1.Search
2. Your enginge code is stamped on the passenger side, below the dizzy, to the right of and above the tranny

on the block there will be an engine code, for a 91 civic usually starting with 'D'. it should be on the left side facing the engine bay, close to the tranny. there is a list of engines and cars they where in here:

All of the above posts are correct, but look closely to the left of the exhaust manifold on the radiator side. This area might be covered with dried oil and grime so you might need to clean this area some to see it. Look for a square block about 1" or so in size. stamped on that square will be the engine identification. On some motors it isa flat surface and others it is angled down towards the front.
