Blown Headgasket?
While changing the spark plugs on my 95 Accord 4 cyl. I Noticed that the thrid and fourth plug wire (going from L to R) had a lot of oil on them when I pulled them out, so before I take it to my local garage to get it replaces I was wondering if I'm making the right call on this. Also could this do any damage to the timming belt? Thanks.
Your dealing with a quite common issue with Honda (although it's quite trivial, and inexpensive to repair.
Have the valve cover resealed. The parts required are:
Valve cover surround seal
Hold-down bolt sealing grommets
spark plug tube seals.
While you're at it, think about having the valve lash adjusted while they are in there. (Honda recommends doing it every 30,000m (48,000km) ).
It's nothing so dyer as a head gasket failure.

He is 100% right the seals that are leaking are the seals that go around the spark plug holes on the valve cover gasket. many times when these seals get really bad they will fill the whole spark plug hole up with oil. When you get the seals replaced get the valves adjusted at the same time, might as well kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
The way you would know it "could" be a bad head gasket is if the tip of the sparkplug (the part that goes into the engine) had either water (almost always a bad head gasket) or oil on them (oil on the tip of the spark plugs could also be bad valve seals causing oil to leak down into the cylinder)

True, that, skipping, farting and the voluminous amounts of smoke coming from the tail pipe.
can be hints also.

if a mechanic told you your headgasket blew cause there is oil in a spark plug tube then he is either:
a. incompetnet
or more likely
b. got a house payment due

Hey, at least you've a sense of humor. (it certainly helps when visited by Noob central
)
A personal note: I too have become fast friends with the spell checker (given up on the search engine however). I too suffer from the flying fickle fingers syndrome!

Thanks for all the advice guys! I've been reading up on this problem, and I guess my diffenition of a lot of oil differs from everyone elses. They were all talking about having up to an inch of oil in there. I had maybe a drop come off one of the plugs when I pulled it out, it was just covered with a lot of oil. And I didn't have much blue smoke come out the tail pipe after I started it up, so i'm thinking that maybe it's just the top seals. So i'm gonna try that first and see if it helps, if not I'll just have to plan todo the whole thing I guess. I also wanted to ask since i'm gonna have to take all that apart how much more trouble would it be to replace the timming belt while i'm in there? I've done this before be it's been a VERY long time. Thanks!
The timing belt is a WHOLE different ball game, and doesn't really require the valve gover's removal.
It does involve such wonderful activities as removing the l/s motor mount, the timing belt shields and other such mechanical gyrations to keep you busy for a while. To do it right involves replacing any seals in the area (Front Main Crankshaft, Counter balance Shaft and Camshaft seals and the water pump.

thanks again for the advice, i'm gonna try and get this fixed this weekend. Now I have another problem I haven't been able to get much advice about. The Temp guage on the dash is always burried in the cold, I'm pretty sure it's not working anymore as i've never actually seen it move. Anyone know of a way I can test it to see if it still works?
