Default carsound cat is dead, should I "hollow" it out?

bang on the cat and you can hear the rattling inside. is it possible to just remove the broken pieces (or all of it) and keep the cat rather than buy a new one? how come that crap doesnt just shoot out the exhaust tail pipe anyway?

Maybe the front section is what broke off, so the rear section doesnt allow it to shoot out of the muffler.

Same thing happened to mine. Mine clogged the exhaust though and left me stranded on a road trip. just take it off and use a rod of some sort and smash all the stuff out of it. I haven't had any problems with inspections since as it still looks like a cat.

cool. that was easier than I thought it would be. only took 15min to take the cat off. it was one giant section that broke off inside. crushed it up with a pick, fell right out. there appears to be another section of the honeycomb still in tact so Ill just leave it.

is there supposed to be a gasket between the cat and b pipe? mine has none.

Yes, there should be a flat triangular shaped gasket between the cat and b-pipe.

thanks...are they ITR specific? and I checked the online parts diagram, dont see a triangular gasket. it shows a "pre chamber gasket"...is that the same thing? part numbers for LS and ITR are the same...if thats the case, I can just run down the street and pick one rather than ghetto rig it.

Thats what I did at first and in a couple months the rest of it came loose and started clogging it again. It may leave you stranded if it clogs sometime while you're out driving. Might want to think about going ahead and taking the rest out.

Remember though, that is for a factory cat. The Carsound will use the triangular gasket as stated before.

Hollow it out??? I wouldn't risk it... might sound like **** (raspy).... don't be cheap and cut corners... just get another cat or a straight pipe.

1. You can go to salvo and by liquid gasket that will work as good as a OEM gasket...

I hollowed mine out when my carsound cat went up on me and it was fine... a little raspy though.

doesnt sound any different as of right now. but as I said I left the other section of honeycomb in.

side note, I have had this cat for about 4 yrs now and never had a problem only reason I think it died is because I was experimenting with nitrous recently

Some states have state inspections and certain states also test emissions. Those kind of inspections. State inspections require a "functioning" cat and some states are more lenient than others.

No change in sound here with having it empty. Sounds fine.

It will have different affects. A straight pipe will allow the exhaust to flow more easily.

What's the point of getting a straight pipe??????? It's basically the same thing as a gutted cat.

Gutted cats create turbulence, whereas a straight pipe does not.
