Slow down!

Escort Passport SR7 Plus Shifters Radar Laser Detector. The all new Escort SuperCharged Performance Passport SR7 Plus shifters incorporates the latest technology to bring you the earliest warning possible, with the fewest false alarms. The Escort Passport SR7 detects all radar and laser frequencies with the Industries lowest falsing rate.

This is the best I have found!
Good luck and slow down!

What's the first thing that happens to someone who buys their first radar detector? They get a speeding ticket. People get this feeling of invincibility with a radar detector, and it always comes back to bite them in the ***.

If you can't afford the tickets, SLOW DOWN.

Another thing to think about... If you get pulled over, and the cop sees that you have a radar, you've pretty much just lost any chance of getting away with just a warning.

Same thing applies to having a sport bike if you get caught doing 5 over the speed limit you have the ticket.

Radar detectors will give you advanced warning only if the Trooper is using a car-mounted unit which is always on (and pointed in your direction.
To defeat the use of detectors, most police have gone to 'instant on' units which remain on, but don't take a 'snapshot' until it's triggered. The newer units emulate their laser cousins with a narrower beam which cuts way down on signals that give away thier presence.
Laser guns are even worst, since not only are they "instant-on" units, but they use a pencil thin beam of light which is directed at vehicles of particular interest (San Marino Red Honda Accords, I suspect), and only those. A laser detector will tell you of the officers presense, just as he takes your "picture".
If it were really honest, your detector would announce "Congratulations, you've just been caught on Radar; rather than sound off every time you drive past a building's alarm system.
Save your money (in two ways) and slow down.

A radar detector isn't a free pass to speed, it's a tool. Just as your eyes are a tool. Nothing more, nothing less.

By the way, and this probably should be a new thread, but you really need to know how fast your Honda is really going. When my speedometer reads 75 mph, I'm actually going about 71 mph. ('99 LX). Apparently Honda Accords (or maybe all Honda's) speedometers are just, well off - and they can't be adjusted (6th gen at least). My friends' '99 LX was off by ~ 4% at 65 mph but apparently Honda considers up to 5% to be "within specs".

Some night, get on the interstate and set your cruise at 65 or 70 (exactly). Useing a stopwatch, time how long it takes you to go, say, 5 miles using the markers on the side of the interstate. Figure out average time per mile, divide that into 3600. That's your actual speed in miles per hour. This is why I got a speeding ticket for going 77 mph in a 65mph zone even though my speedometer was reading 83 mph (only speeding ticket I've gotten in over 15 years, got out of it by paying $100 to take a safe driving course).

Back to the radar detector issue, I haven't used one in years but am thinking about one again. Illinois has started using cameras to take photos of speeders in work zones, and the ticket is $375. I'm not against slowing down when there are workers, of course, but they put the cones out for seemingly miles when there's nobody (and no equipment) around, technically the speed limit is still 45mph and if caught going over 45 in those areas, $375. ($1,000 second offense)

Once while rallying, me and my navigator borrowed his dads radar detector, it was a Valentine (cant remember what model). It cost about $350.00 when it was brand new.

On the freeway the thing started beeping like hell, and about 10 seconds a cop was coming up on the on ramp just parallel to us. We slowed down and avoided a ticket. but like it was stated earlier, its just a tool.

With or without a radar detector, you need the same scenario. Someone in front of you, going as fast or faster than you are. So he gets nailed, instead of you. So I don't see what a radar detector does, besides the aggravating beeping noise for the imaginary cop. If you don't have a car ahead of you, running interference, you run a higher risk. I've gotten some pretty good blockers (85-90mph) on interstates. On regular surface streets you don't get much help, so you have to keep it within 7mph of the limit. And no, I don't speed all the time. But I have, on occasion, "followed" some pretty fast cars.

i have one of thos cobra things because my co-worker was hungry and sold it to me for 10 bucks with everything included. to be honest, i don't think it works, because by the time it rings, i usually can see what's there. but for 10 bucks, when it retailed at 100, i couldn't go wrong.

radar detectors are okay. don't be a moron and do double your speed and you'll be fine. don't put ricer spoilers and have loud mufflers and you'll be fine. i've been guilty of doing 60 in a 40 with a cop near, but since i have such a stock car, he didn't think anything of it. whereas a friend of mine with a hooked up WRX gets tickets if he even THINKs about going 42mph. then again, it's all relative to location. i live in miami where high school kids like to rice out there cars and expletive it up for the rest of us.

Those things are garbage. I used to have one and it didnt actually go off until I noticed the cop myself passing by downtown. Gave it my friend for free. Luckily didnt get any tickets. I now have the Passport Escort 8500 X50. Its better but theres never going to be a perfect radar that will notify you of every hiding cop. Just like everyone else has said I use it as a tool. Ill admit that I drive fast but im always aware of whats going on for the most part. As long as you pay attention to your surroundings and dont excessivly speed getting a ticket should be too much of a problem as long as your careful. So far ive only got 3 warnings after almost 2 years of driving.....knock on wood....

Edit: Simply stated dont want anymore tickets just dont speed. Radar detectors can sometimes cause people to get into more trouble if you get too cocky driving

Just to comment on that, driving around FL, I've noticed that in some cases the cops will pull over the "trail" car if there are 2 or 3 cars doing +15 the speedlimit. I'm lucky enough to have not gotten a speed related ticket (got one for an illegal right turn on red so go figure). One of my friends was trailing a truck doing 88 in a 55 zone (the speedlimit may as well be 70 because the whole world goes 70) and got nailed for the ticket. And another friend was in a 7 car "convoy" going 85 in a 70, 4 cops pull out from the median and pulled over the last 4 cars.

2 questions. Can a city cop (in my case OPD orlando police department) can't pull me over on the highway for speeding, but something like not using turn signal to change lanes?

Another weird one, im riding with a friend of mine back home from the beach, theres a car behind us with a few of our friends and we're doing 100 in a 60 zone, weaving in between cars quite frequently. So a car pulls up next to us, a Jeep cherokee, and a guy rolls down his window and takes out a badge on a chain and signals for us to pull over into a parking lot. He even had lights on his visor. So we pull over and two guys get out, one to talk to each car. The guy who came and talked to the girl driving was kind of nice, but never showed us his badge, and claimed he was an FBI agent. So I'm thinking what is an FBI agent doing pulling me over in bumfuck,FL. He didn't give us that hard of a time and let us off. THe other guy however, told the other girl that you couldn't change lanes more than 1 time in a mile (wtf) and was giving us a bunch of BS things leading me to believe they were fake?

Nothing is fool-proof. Some cops will let 10 speeding cars go by before he decides to pull the next one over. But I have been passed by cars going about 95. Then I would speed up to about 85-90. Then see the same car pulled over 20miles or so down the road. I'm the one who honked and waved. If you were weaving in and out of traffic at 100mph, you deserve a ticket, or worse.

I completely agree with you, I've only ever taken my car above 100 before because I don't feel wholly safe doing so. I wasn't driving was the bad part, but my main question was about the supposed "FBI agents". There is reckless speeding and then there is defensive speeding.

a radar usually only works in local roads. It usually doesn't work on the highway as much. But its definately something worth investing it. If you think about it, a top of the line radar will pay for itself after it warns you for just ONY speeding ticket. I have a k-40, the best one out there like 2-3 years ago. Cost me like $250. I believe Valentine is one of the best ones right now. I think they run about $300. As far as you can't get any more speeding tickets. Like others said...just don't speed anymore!!!!!

I have a Whistler 945 that I paid $75 for about 8 years ago. I always speed and the only time I have ever gotten a ticket is when I unplugged it to use the lighter and forgot to plug it back in. While it is true that the laser has no warning if you are the first car to get targeted, it also picks up the GPS signal that most all cops are transmitting these days. Mine has never failed me. Before the whistler, I had a cheap old maxxon that would pick up Ka and X bands 3 to 5 miles out. That was before laser. I think paying $250 to $350 is a waste of money. I think the best way to avoid tickets is to not have tinted windows. A cop that is watching speeeders go by and is being selective will see tinted windows and think to himself, Young punk with beer or weed or something else to hide.

No I don't like radar detectors. When ever Ive had one i just end up getting more tickets.
But here are some things to keep in mind. That I have learned from years of getting tickets at one time I had five page driving record.

when your on the freeway just watch the median and the shoulders if you see any spot were a cop could hide like the end of a bridge or guard rail slow down for a minute until you make sure.

When your out of your normal driving schedule like late for work,or getting ready to go on vacation and running around town doing last minute things don't speed. It's like the god of luck knows your getting ready to do something cool and it wants to crap all over it.Tickets work nicely for that.

The only ticket free place to speed is a really curvy back road cops are almost never on them and if they are they won't have time to turn around and get you.
And if they come up on you from behind it's your own fault.

Really if your on driving probation for points or just can't afford a ticket.just slow down.Until you get some points off you license.
People can flame or what ever they want but everyone speeds every time they get in their car.
I have a friend who is a Kentucky state trooper and he said when he see's someone doing the speed limit he gets suspicious because nine times out of ten it's someone who's had to much to drink trying to get home without a DUI
