d16y8 question... again...
Well, I just bought mine. Thing is, it's got a funny little pipe with a plate attached with 2 bolts coming from the top of the oilpan just beside the exhaust manifold... this pipe doesn't seem to be leaking oil or anything, though it is covered in crud. does anybody have any clue what this is?
Also, on the VTEC solenoid, there is a little sensor that seems to be broken (I do have full warranty) so anyone know what that is as well?
Thanks

c'mon guys, it's a small metal protrusion, looks stock, and it is right on the front of the engine (it isn't the dipstick, which is on the side
WTF could this be??
WTF could this be??
Where is it located exactly?????
Is it between the ac compressor and the exhaust manifold???? Ac lines, power steering lines?????
Also for the vtec solenoid, there is an oil pressure sensor right below it. What color are the wires coming out of it? Also there is a coolant temp switch located on the thermostat housing.
I am just thinking off the top of my head. Got pics?????

It's just to the right of the exhaust manifold as it comes off the cylinder head, to the right of the bottom of the heat shield. I took it off, andI think it may have been a turbo feed! BTW my valve cover gasket looks different... it says "1.6 VTEC" on the cover... thoughts?

what year is it again? Does it look like this? The 96-00 should look like the one in my pics. Mine is a 98 D16Y8.

The y8's do not come with vtec written on the valve cover, at least the ones from the civic ex's. The z6 (92-95) sohc vtec engines did however have vtec on the valve cover. The pic above is a z6 engine.
If you look on the block, to the left of the exhaust manifold right below the coolant neck there is a stamp of the engine code. It should say D16y8, if yours says d16z6, then you were sold the wrong thing, or misinformed at the least.
What car did this come out of? IF it is from an acura, then their valve covers could be different?????? If the valve cover is different, there may be a few other little things different as well, like this pipe you speak of.
HTH, let me know either way.
Also, if you look on the back of the engine by the oil pan, there should be a green vin plate bolted to the engine. In the U.S., you can run that vin number at carfax and it will tell you the year, make, model and last reported mileage to the dmv. Dont know if canadian vehicles are listed on their, but you could give it a shot.
Were you able to get pics yet?

Unfortunately, I don't have any pics, and the block stamp does indeed read d16y8. That was the first thing I checked before I bought it. It is a 96, I checked the cylinder head date. I have seen a similar valve cover to this one on another guy's CRX D16y8 swap, so it could be that this is a different canadian model to the one in the US, or it is an aftermarket one. I hope it's the former. The engine has no green vin plate on the back, so it must be only in the states... Problem is, I don't have a digital cam or anything, so it'll be a while before I can get pics. Sorry
As for this pipe thing, I'll just make sure it's plugged off and leave it alone. I'll do a compression test on it when I get it running, and if it's low I'll get my warranty

Cool, did they tell you what the engine came out of? I suppose it could have been a y8 block with z6 head. but then again if it came from an acura, or a canadian vehicle they may be slightly different.

well, it's kinda complicated... originally, '96 Civic Si, then into 98 Civic CX who wrecked his car. I ended up with the motor
