Default R for a Daily Driver?

Right now I currently have a deposit on the Fit because I thought it would be nice to have a new car, warranty, lots of airbags, good gas mileage, etc. But I've always wanted a PY ITR and everytime I see a picture of one, it makes the desire even greater. So my question is: Are "R"s practical for daily driving in SD / OC? I live in a middle class neighborhood in SD and I won't have a garage available probably for a month or so. I already read the thread about theft and it has given me some insight but some more input would be appreciated. I guess it comes down to: Should I go for it and get my dream ride (you only live once) or play it safe and get a car that is less of a thief magnet?

Thank you,

Layton

LOL, read up on all the theft, then read the "do you regret selling" thread. For a DD it was an awesome car for me. Worrying about the theft issues though all the time sucks ***. I say if you've got a garage, get one, otherwise I'd stay away from them. Either way GL.

I live in a gated community with hourly security patrols, but I still stress out if I don't park my car in the garage. I look out my window throughout the day at work to make sure it's doing okay (Keeping in mind I work in a high-class business office in a very nice area.). You don't know paranoia until you own an R. Trust me. If you don't have a secure place to park it at night or you're not prepared to fully equip it with thief prevention devices, the R is not for you.

Edit: Not only do you need a secure place to park it at NIGHT, but all the time. If you work a really bad area, I suggest you don't drive your car to work. If you don't have a second car in this situation, or a similar situation, my advice would be to steer clear of buying an R.

Just my two cents.

I drive mine everyday - but then again I've got layered security, full coverage insurance and a garage to keep her in at night.

If I were to lose any of the above, the car would have to be sold or put into storage.

Street parking (or a driveway for that matter) is not a viable option. If the car can be seen (and in some cases it's location known) it can be stolen.

Just my $3.50

I used to drive mine everyday. Even in a secured parking garage I would find myself going down to check on it occasionally. I'm not overly paranoid about it, but it is on my mind all the time.

I put 105,000 miles on mine in 5.5 years(around 300 miles a week). Even with 500lb springs, its plush compared to what I'm use to. No theft problems where I live.

I would get one. You only live once. You can get something slow and boring when you get married.

To be honest, I really believe the main factory is where you live. I live in an area where people with loud civic's get more attention then my integra with type r written on the side of it of it. I usually don't worry at all where I leave it. I have a decent security system though. It is always garaged too. I usually switch where I have it garaged though just to be more safe. Last month I had it garaged in 7 diffrent locations. In all honesty though, it's probably so unnecessary to do that where I live. I have no hesitations to leave it in public areas either. I can drive it to the mall with my GF and not have any worries like others in this forum. Only you know the area where you live. If it is known to be bad, then I would say keep it safe and get the fit (which is a badass car anyhow). If you believe it to be safe, then by all means endulge yourself in the amazing c5 vtec experience!!

Yeah I agree. I have no concerns of theft at all. I leave my car running when I run into the store, and park it at the malls, movie theator, downtown, etc. I was a little worried when I parked it at the airport for a week on 4 seperate ocassions this past summer, but noone messed with it.

That said, I wont park it outside places like the 9:30 club in DC. When I got there I get a parking deck which is safer.

I daily drive it, but it helps if you're not worried about the car. I've got insurance so I don't worry at all.

I have full coverage, yet I still worry. My R is not just a car. It's not just something to get me from point A to point B. It's much more than that, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that thinks this.

I share this feeling as well. I love my car. But at the end of the dar, it's still just a car. Can be replaced easily. Much more worried about losing tha intangibles in life.

My question was more like: Is theft a big problem using an R as a daily driver?

Thanks everyone for the input! If I do decide to go R I'll clean out an extra spot in the garage next to grandmas mustang

Unless an awesome offer fell in your lap, why not wait until you get the garage first and then get the R? Might give you some peace of mind.

Don't know about Cali. I still wouldn't be worried since its not worth it. I have had mine for 3.5yrs and have put about 100,000 miles on it in those years and it stays outside. I bought the car with 47,000miles but I am on my second motor. I don't regret a single mile.

I've had my R for about 8 months and it has never seen the inside of my garage... I'll park it pretty much anywhere. It lives on the driveway for sometimes up to a week alone. My wife drove it for over two weeks everywhere... meaning: school, kids, soccer, store, doctors office and more. I typically drive it at night and run the **** outta it. It's just a blast to drive... I'm looking forward to the day that I drive it for work. However, theft here seems to be less than most metropolitan areas.

Point is: you can sit around scared that it will get stolen like I did the first few months (many sleepless nights) or you can realize that it's just a freaking car and it was meant to be driven. I have insurance and I'll net more than 3K if it gets stolen... so now I'm like whatever. Am I a retard for my views or just too realistic? Flame me if you will and tell me how I'm insensitive becuase your car got stolen... perhaps mention that you hope my car gets stolen because of my actions. If it gets stolen... I'll just get another one. The less that there are the more they will be worth one day.

BTW.... go for it. Keep it safe

I dailied my R; but I lived in fear that people would start profiling the car or recognizing me with it. I left my car out for one night in the Del Mar/Rancho Santa Fe ...FOR ONE NIGHT and when I woke up there was an attempted theft on it. Whoever tried to break in broke my window/door moulding- most useless $80 spent on fixing something that someone broke trying to get into your car

I agree. It's a great car, but it is just a car. I've daily driven mine for 93k+ miles in SoCal and the car stays out in an open lot every night of the year.

I daily drive mine. It gets a lot of attention from people but i'm not worried about it getting stolen. If it does get stolen then I WILL find another one because I will not part with this car.

How long do ITR motors last when daily driven?
