Default automatic g/boxes

well seeing as we dont have a trans forum yet ill ask here.
its in regards to various performance characteristics of auto boxes.

what sort of power or torque losses will you get running through an auto, last i heard theyve improved it from 5-10 % loss back in 95 to now about 1-2% is this about correct?

whats the deal with the torque converter anyway, what does it do, i sorta get that its a fluid connection to the box, but why is it called torque converter, is this what allows you to stop at the lights and leave it in drive.

all help appreciated
