How to distinguish type r from b16 head?
Wondering if there was any way to tell the difference between a b18c5 head from a b16 head, besides the difference in valve cover. Anyone know?
I have both, they are virtualy the same, being the same casting. In Japan production of R heads started in 1996, 1997 in the North America. Only the valves would be slightly different, and cams of coarse if included which can be identified by the rings at one end of them.
Casting for casting mounted on the same block, not counting the cams, dyno's have shown a difference of only 4 whp.

thanks for the pics that will help a lot, two more questions, 1. what year is your motor 2. are any of the stamping, like the pr3-3 different on your b16 head?

As the pic shows...its a 1999 model. All b16 and type r heads are stamped PR3.
Here's another link for cams:

Another distinguishing feature is that ITR heads are colored green where the distributer mounts. The only problem with using this as a means of distinguishing an ITR head is that the green marking comes off REALLY easily. So it might not even be there on the real deal. Also, since this marking appears to be made with a magic marker, t is possible that someone could color this area green on a plain old B16A head.
