Hey guys im going to be spending my spring break working on the lude installing Exedy organic clutch
Flywheel resurface
Rear main seal replacement
My question is how many of you have just pulled it out and replaced it without taking off the rear main seal cover, my manual says to do so(using honda bond to seal it). I searched and mixed results came up, some just pulled er out and tapped it back in and others did it by the manual and took off the cover.
I dont have any hondabond( no honda dealership in my duke town).
So will some high temp rtv from a local parts store do the job or is there something special about hondabond?
I know the downpipe+oilpan need to come off to get the seal cover off, so should i just go ahead and take it all off and reseal it all? Any help would be appriciated. Thank you in advance.

I've done it both ways. I prefer to take the rear cover off and install it per the manual, as it's easier to ensure that the seal is properly installed (because the crankshaft isn't in the way!). However, I've never had one leak doing it with the rear cover on the engine.
I find that Hondabond comes off 10 times easier than RTV. So I only use Hondabond. I stopped using Hondabond 4. That stuff sucks because it's so stringy. It's more expensive, but I only use Hondabond HT on everything.

Thanks, ya some of the posts i read said to be careful of the depth of the seal.I will do it by taking the cover off then.
I just want to make sure that high temp rtv from a parts store will hold. Im sure mechanic's(non honda service techs) all over the place have used parts store rtv.
