It's a 1992 Accord, no check engine light, and it does exactly as I described. It idles ok, but when I try to give it gas it seems like it's about to die...and indeed it usually does. Only after a little bit will the rpms actually rise and the car will move.
Anyone have any ideas of what problem might have these symptoms?

I have a '91 Accord, automagic. Mine shakes at acceleration from a stop as well, but doesn't get to the point of dying, not even close. My problem is that my EGR ports are clogged and I just haven't bothered to have them cleaned up yet.

I'll check both of these and let you know what happens. Thanks
