Differnt transmission's torque and gearing
so i have a d16a6. Im not sure how to tell which tranny is in it. I want to know what the differences are. I've searched but it's still kinda vauge. My crx going 80 in 5th is at 3k to race im having to put in down to 3rd and i still dont have much torque. Could the timing cause this or gearing? is it normal to have to torque in 5th. I have to have it in 3rd to keep going 75 up hills.
Are dx, hf, and si tranny's all interchangeable. How can i tell which one i have. What is the difference in the trannys ie.hf has longer 5th gear? I plan on putting a y8 head on my a6 what is the best tranny for highway and race. thx

We'll if you have an Si tranny It's called and L3 tranny, only Si's came with them I'm not to big on specs w/ trannys but i know it's something like this 1-30mph 2-52mph 3-81 4-105 5-132

It doesn't sound like you have an SI transmission. With an SI transmission, you run 4000RPM at 80MPH in fifth. 3000RPM at 80MPH in fifth sounds more like an HF transmission. And yes, all of these transmissions are interchangeable. So it sounds like (1) someone wanted a cheaper transmission to swap when their SI transmission went out, or (2) you bought an HF with a swap, and the original swapper did not want to (or couldn't) bear the expense of an SI transmission.

Incorrect...L3 designation is not specific to the Si.
3000 rpm for 80mph in 5th gear is a strange result.
The Si will be doing about 4000
The DX will be doing about 3500
The Hf will be turning a paltry 2500
...so it's not one of those. Unless you're running a freak tire/wheel combo.
There are a couple of other less common D cable trannys that I can't quote the specs off the top of my head.
The 90-91 Civic EX had a different final drive(4.05 I think) than the DX or Si, but I thought the 1-5 gear set was the same. That would land it between the Si and DX rpms and not the culprit.
The 1988 DX final drive was not 3.88 like all the other years. This was noted by the 1988 FSM and confirmed by Mista Bone...unfortunately I don't rememeber what it was.
And finally, I keep reading that there was different HF final drive for the California only version. I have never been able to confirm or disprove this fact to my satisfaction.

Honda lists 3 separate final drives for the HF transmission - one each for the KA (49 state), KL (Calif.) & KH (high altitude) emissions - i personally can't verify what the KA & KL final drive ratios are, but being in Colorado i have worked on numerous KH (high altitude) HF transmissions and they all have a 3.777 final drive - 18 teeth on countershaft and 68 teeth on the ring gear

that is correct - this transmission was also an option in the 91 Civic Si (not CRX)

It doesnt matter if you have BIG wheels and rubber bands for the tires or small wheels and tall sidewalled tires. Its the overall circumference of the wheel and tire combination that matters and will afffect your overall Final Drive.
