3rd & 4th grear grind problem!
Ok i have done searches and seen diffrent things, my y1 jdm tranny is starting to gring in 3rd and some 4th, i want to get the ys1 tranny , i already have a 90-91 integra flywheel and clutch for the y1 ,will all that go on the YS1 if i get one? and i ahve heard that it has more splines and wont switch over? thanks!
If you run a ys1 you will need a new clutch, the trans splines are a different count on the 89-91 and 92-up B-series trannies. Just get a clutch for any 92-up B-series, DA-GS-R, or any hydro B-series since they all run the same clutch. The ys1 is a beefier tranny as well and it also shares parts with the USDMs meaning if you ever have parts to replace you won't have to source something from Japan like on the y1 tranny (and all pre-92 B-series trannies) **The flywheel will work fine**
i really dont want to have to buy a new clutch! is there any other way to fix this problem, a machanic told my the since its starting to grind in 4th that it is probly to late to replace sincronizors for third.
i wonder how many more posts it will be till i see the obligatory "cure-all" gm synchromesh nonsense.
for starters:
synchros are made of brass (soft metal) and act as brakes for gears. When the input shaft (which connects to the clutch) is spinning in say 2nd gear, all the other gears are spinning at different rpms. pull it out of 2nd gear (neutral) and move the shifter towards 3rd gear and the synchro sleeve slides toward 3rd gear. before it meets up with 3rd gear it passes over the synchro and pushes it towards the gear (matches the rpms) and then engages the gear. This process is repeated over and over.
when gears grind it's the teeth on the sychro sleeve matching the rpm of the gear. So it either means that the synchros aren't working properly or the gear isn't fully engaging. bad motors mounts could shift the drivetrain and keep the 4th gear from wanting to engage sometimes.
someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i would think that if your 2nd and 4th gear are grinding = bad motor mounts. if your shifter is moving when you get on it = bad motor mounts. it sounds to me like your synchros might be going out.

Yeah but the YS1 will be a better tranny for the long run simply because it's beefier and has any replacement parts available at any Honda/Acura dealership
Your tranny sounds like it's doing exactly what my y1 was doing when I bought my REX, the synchros went bad and then 3rd and 4th got damaged since the problem was not addressed soon enough. Since replacement gears were next to impossible to come across I just opted for the ys1 in my old GS-R and since I already had the proper clutch that was not an issue. I know it sucks but just think long term, get the clutch (Exedy stage 1 is all you need for N/A) and get the ys1 cause it will save SOOO much headache for you one day
+ your can add all the 92-up tranny parts you want like Type R LSD, final drive and so on!
this won't work with the 91 and earlier trannies.

You are right, the problem still lies with having to get new ones which as far as I have found are not available here in the states not to mention that there is a very good chance that his gears are starting to wear. Just replacing the synchros in this situation would just make them wear out again if the gears are starting to wear. I went through this exacrt scenerio with my old y1 which even had and LSD so I REALLY wanted to make it work, just way to much hassle. I still have all the parts from the y1 minus the LSD I sold. 1st, 2nd and 5th are good but nothing else so maybe somebody will need it one day.

You better get that bearing replaced before it really does more damage to your tranny, happened to my Hydro GSR tranny on my old civic. My bearing was making noise until the day it went out and cause some of my gears to go bad as well, FIX IT NOW before it's too late and cost more.

YES!! The bearing is what keeps the input shaft centered and balanced as it spins, your synchros could be going bad anyway but that bearing going out will trash your tranny and replacing gear sets is not cheap.

Man, making me jealous w/ that setup
. Yes just get the Exedy stage 1 kit (same for all 92 up B-series) and you will be all set. If you need a great price on one hit me up and I can take care of it for you (most likely cheapest price you'll find)
I've got the stage 1 clutch in my B16 swap w/ same tranny and it has over 50k miles of drag and road racing on it, hasn't faded a bit!!! you will love it!

So in other words gm synchromesh is not the way to go? Even though it stops the grinding?

You got me, if it says "GM" then that's all I need to see to know I need to keep it away from my "HONDA". if your synchros are going out there is no "cure all" you just need to get them fixed!!!! seems there is always somebody wanting to bandaid the problem instead of actually "fixing it"!!

it's transmission fluid. There is nothing about it that is so great that it completely rebuilds your transmission for the 25 dollars that it costs. I see hundreds of posts on this site about people that swear by synchromesh you have obviously never rebuilt a transmission.
