What can I get for...?
Hi everyone, I am now 16 and am eligible for a license on may 1st. I race dirtbikes and have a pulling tractor, so thats where I have put a lot of my money for as long as, well, forever. Well good old grandpa hands me a 88(slight chance its an 89) CRX si.(I will have pics soon of the car, it has 2 silver dollar sized spots in the LRear quarter panel where the paint just started to bubble. I gotta get some cables for my digi cam) It runs good, new timing belt and clutch etc, just inspected 2 weeks ago. Old gramps tells me its mine. Well I want to get into autocross. Could I do a complete swap for $2500, or isnt that even close? I will admit I dont know everything needed, so I am asking you guys. My dads friend did a swap in his CRX, and said he would do mine for me if i bought him a case of beer. I am looking at this swap.. http://hmotorsonline.com/shop/...30002. Is a b16a good for me? I know a fellow that wants to do a swap and he said he would GIVE me a B18C or whatever, im sorry if thats wrong. I dont want the whole ricer look, stock lines probably and i wanted 15's for autocross. Any suggestions? Last of all, my chemistry teacher has a garage and he handles eibach suspension components. He raced a VW rabbit and did well, until this homo got engaged and is selling everything now. Should I use eibach springs with Tokico gas shocks? what setups do you guys like? I am limited to about 5 or 6 Grand from this summer from hanging drywall, unless i sell one of my fourwheelers. Dad says I have to pay for everything because then I might not want to run from the cops and wreck my investment, he's a smartass like that. Would should I do first? Thank you, and dont thrash me, im trying to learn guys!
I think the swap is do-able for $2500.00 or somewhere close to there. I would also look into a boosted single cam or something, they are pretty cheap and very fun. And as far as the suspension is concerned eibach makes ground control coilovers, which are great. And tokico illuminas are excellent as well. Good luck!
hmmm dont really know much about autocross, but damn, u just turned 16 and u got all this **** right at ur doorstep, i wish i had that
and ya damn, an ef si for $200 thats amazing, i dont care what the condition is, thats amazing.
but ya for ur price range, you could do one of the following things.. depending on how fast u wanna go.
b16a1 swap (160 hp, i think its around 140 to the wheels, but its a torquless bastard at around 111 foot pounds i think) u can have that swap done anywhere from 2-3k, because for that swap, u will need aftermarket motor mounts, shift linkage, axles, and will also have to hammer a good size dent into ur drivers side shock tower area to fit in the distributor pulley or w/e it is in there, i know u gotta hamer in a dent though. but after all that bs, doesnt think u will need any wiring besides for the vtec and obd0-obd1. then u can think about getting the basic bolt ons like intake/header/exhaust for a good i dont know 30-40 hp for all those.
u could also look into d series. (jdm d15b vtec, d16z6, d16y8, dohc zc) all are relativly close in hp/torque wise, and will be a direct bolt in for u besides vtec wiring since ur already mpfi, and have the si 5 speed tranny. im personallly looking into the d15b vtec swap for my 91 ef, and its gonna cost me around $1000-1500 cuz of the wiring and tranny bs
. but anyway, pretty much any d series engine would be a direct bolt in for you, maybe have to switch out the axles cuz ur an 88. but these motors can be held for a couple hundred dollars, and then u can boost the **** out of them for little $$$ to make them up to b series standards.
you could also do the b18c (gsr) swap, which is a little more complicated than the b16 since u gotta convert to hydro transmission, more wiring. but more power, but dont know if u will have enough left over to mod it a little bit. but this is nice powerful starting engine if u wanna go this route. i think they run for around $2900 + shipping.
and then on with suspension. will all this power, ur gonna want a stiff suspension, so anywhere from kyb, koni, tokiko, skunk 2, tein is good to go. but remember u get what u pay for, some of these strut packages run for 500 to over 1k. then if u got anything left over from all this, slap on some 15" tires (16's are actually better but more $$$) get an alignment and u are on ur way!

good luck man!

for auto-x keep the stock motor, bolt ons maybe depending on what class, Koni sports w/ground controls 450f 500r, suspension teq rear bar or progress, 15x7 wheels dep ending class maybe 6.5, maybe some new bushings too, thats a good start, i would drive with the stock motor for a while to get a feel for the car you might like it the way it is, you might be surprised. If you go with a motor swap you go right to SM2 where i am. you will have to invest lots of $ to be competitive in this class its mostly corvettes
and miatas
. Do you have a $2000 tire budget?

damn lucky kid. if it was my car, i would purchase another d16a6 and have it rebuilt so you dont have down time. they are readily available and very inexspensive. they have decent low to mid torque which is what youll need the most of if you plan to auto-x it. as for suspension...you cant go wrong with progress. they make quality coilovers, sway bars and camber kits. i would upgrade the rear drums to disc brakes as well, but thats just me. good luck with it and lets see some pix soon!
Thanks for all the info guys. I will be going to get my wisdom teeth out friday, so I can probably get some pics during my down time. I am so pumped he gave it to me. I love this little red car, and dont know where to start. It does need a head unit and speakers though, thats first. There is a guy in my local shopper with a 91 CRX si, he says all parts $25ea. I am givin him a call to see about the rear brakes, and what he wants for the whole thing. Another guy has one for $800, but Im short on that right now, but maybe soon if it snows and I can get some plowin money, I will have a parts car. He says its a 92?
