Default worth builing a SCCA legal cage in a Del Sol?

So, I finally cut my death trap cage out of the Del Sol!!! I have been considering sending the car to California for the new cage, but I am torn on what to build it to.

Because Del Sols are inherently wet noodles, the new cage was going to be as "built" as possible. Problem being, this will not fly with SCCA.

Now, my question is, would a Del Sol even be competetive in IT racing with a cage built to there rule book? or is it just going to be too flex? If the car wouldn't be competetive there, it would be in my best interest to build it to HC spec since that is all i ahve been racing anyways. I just don't want to shut any doors if it could bite me later.

im not sure what your getting at, but i think you mean as building the cage to stiffen the chassi, and in IT the purpose of the cage is only supposed to be to provide saftey.

I have seen some IT cages that were defently built with the purpose of "stiffening the chassi" but at the safe time also provide a safer car.

Most of the time the line is so blured between stiffing and saftey, that you can call it whatever you want.

As long as you only connect at the maximum 8 points specified by the GCR/ITCS, you can play "connect the dots" as agressively as you want.

That is exactly it. Because you "supposedly" aren't supposed to be stiffening the chassy for SCCA, could a Del Sol even be competitive? In my opinion, I feel like that car needs as much cage as possible to be a race worthy car.

If the car isn't going to be race worthy with a SCCA legal cage, I shouldn't worry about making it legal because I wouldn't want to race it!

Competitive in what class?

The VTEC car has proven to not have the top end to hang in ITS. Are any of them classed in ITA?
The flexibility isn't an issue. A well built 8 point cage will solve that.

It falls into ITA.

THe original intent was to put two points through the fire wall to get a total of 8, but that would conflict with SCCA.

What would that get you?
How is the del sol constructed differently in front of the firewall than a Civic? I'm not a del sol expert, but my understanding is that the "flexible flyer" issues come from the lack of roof and lie in the middle of the car. An 8 point cage fixes this.

If its got a whp/weight ratio of around 18, it'll likely be a good ITA car. Assuming the gearing and aero dont suck.

Be careful when putting a cage in a del sol. The car will pull together and you will not be able to open the doors.

DUDE! Danny just let me build your cage! I'm gunna be down there the weekend of march 18-19, we can have a drink and talk about it. There are provisions within the SCCA rules specificlly for the del sol that I can interpret creatively and build you a kickass SCCA legal cage. I'm doing one this weekend in a del sol. I'll let you know how it goes.

Yeah.. I definetly want Mike to do it.. just trying to figure out what class to build it to.. Damn politics in racing!

I guess I will just trust you Mike! I'm getting close to having the finances arranged, after this weekend I should have everything arranged with the new sponsor, well I hope!!!

You wouldn't happen to be bringing your trailer out with you??? I wish you wern't so far, it would make everything so much easier!
