Default 96 spec vs 98 spec JDM header q's

I know that the 96 spec is cast iron, and the 98 spec is steel. i also believe that the 96 spec is 4-2-1, while the 98 spec is 4-1 (please correct me if i'm wrong). what i would like to know is if they both have 2.5" collectors, and if the are the same length (interchangeable).

i have a 97 jdm itr with stock manifold, and i'd like to upgrade to the 98 spec, and i want to know if i would need the 98 spec cat, or any other exhaust work done, or if it is plug and play.

also, would this even be worth it if I am keeping the stock exhaust?

they both use the 2.5in. donut gasket.

I have used both on my car and am currently running the JDM 4-1 thanks to white rocket here.

According to Honda, the use of the 4-1 enabled some gains to be made lower in the rev range.

Type-R Legends DVD have published numbers which show for a 96spec to be:

200ps/8000rpm
18.5kgm (131ft lbs) @ 7500rpm

98spec:
200ps/8000rpm
19.0kgm (135ft lbs) @ 6200rpm

The catback exhaust did not change in terms of pipe diameter from 96/98spec. So you would see some favorable gains. There is no need to change the cat to a 98spec either.

since the 96spec is made from cast iron and the 98spec is from stainless steel has anyone noticed a change in noise with the 98spec header?

the reason I ask is that i'm concerned about the buzziness coming from the header with aftermarket units that are stainless steel. I miss the quietness from the ol' cast iron header.

if anyone has used both, please comment. thanks!

I changed my stock 96spec header for a s/s 5zigen header and at first it compleetly killed the sound at vtec x-over but it gradually returned in all its glory after a few days. I have noticed no difference in noise bewteen the two of them

do you get any buzzy noises at all? I have just bought a Legalis R too and i'd love to find a 4-2-1 JDM 5Zigen header also, but those are uber rare.

i was thinking of just going for the 96spec JDM 4-2-1 header b/c it's cast iron. i'm sick of the buzzy/resonance noise from my thin walled 98spec JDM ITR copy.

I too am in the same situation because my exhaust manifold on my 96 JDM R has cracked quite bad. I'm not sure why, maybe because it's rusted badly from the climate in Japan?

Anyway I am wondering if I will be able to use any of the 96 heat shields with the 98 other than not being able to use the upper heat shield. Also, are the brackets the same?
