88/89 Civic owners..
Ok! A buddy of mine has an 88 or 89 Civic cannot remember the year, I know it is 1 or the other.
Anyways, he got a CEL, how does one check a CEL for that year/make/model ?
We took apart the pass. side and found the ECU, which has a light on it. It flashes, is that normal or is that the CEL code?
If in fact it is, it flashes 8 times, so what is CEL #8?
Thank in advance, if anyone could help

That is the way you check the code. You just count the # of times the light flashes. I'm not sure what #8 is but I'm sure someone here will.
#8 is the TDC(top dead center) sensor. it's in the dizzy and cannot be repaired without buying a new distributer. Check your wiring just to make sure you don't have a faulty connection or a cut wire.

Great thanks!
Would that cause the car to run rather sluggish?
He said the car runs rather sluggish, and seems to require more gas.
Are these symptoms of CEL #8?

Ok crash course. most Honda distributers for that vintage(pre-OBD) Had 3 sensors that tell the ECU. You'll get a code if anyone one of these goes bad, and if one goes bad it usually means the rest are gonna go bad sometime soon.
1) Code 4 ~ CPS or Crank Postion sensor
2) Code 8 ~ TDC or Top-Dead Center Sensor
2) Code 9 ~ CYP or Cylinder Postion Senosr
All these sensor are vital to the ECU. They provide it with the data that allows it to correctly time the electrical components of the igniton system (IE: Spark plugs and Fuel Injectors) with the mechanical workings of the motor. It's a good bet that if he says the car feels sluggish and is consuming more gas than normal it's from the bad TDC sensor.
