97 Accord - Need New Exhaust
I have a 1997 Accord EX 4cyl. 4Dr, 186,000 miles
The exhaust has 2 exit pipes coming out of the muffler. This is the original exhaust from the factory. I am very surprised it lasted this long.
My exhaust has a hole in the pipe just before the muffler. It is a long gash and I don't think it is repairable for long.
The muffler assembly includes the exhaust tips, muffler and pipe leading to the center pipe.
I can get this assembly for $167 from the Honda dealer, this includes the muffler, gasket, springs, bolts, nuts (in case the old ones are bad). I figure I can put this section on myself.
Does this sound like an ok deal? Also, all the OEM exhausts I see online only have one exit pipe coming out of the muffler, but mine has 2 and it's not a V6. Anyone know why mine has 2? Do those mufflers cost more? If I put a single outlet muffler on it, will I hurt airflow?
Thanks!

The dual outlet was for two purposes (and is unique to the EX)
1) additional flow capacity
2) additional "wow" factor ("Oooo, Dual tips! Chromed no less!) for badge recognition (Yup Bubba, that's one of them there Itty bitty EX Honda things)
It's a good deal if it's your daily driver. You're only other option would be either an Axle-back or Cat-Back stainless system. Either of which will require hitting up the neighbor's kids for their lunch money for a while

Thanks for the info on the dual tips.
I am definitely a daily driver and don't care too much about performance.
I will go ahead and get the axel-back from the dealer. I would hate to have the mid-pipe or catylitic section die within the next year or so though.
I guess I can just replace it if it dies as well.
Thanks!

For dual exhaust that is said to be OEM for a ’97 Accord I4, check the top picture at this link:

As for actually doing the replacement, I’ve never done exhaust work on my Accord but from replacing systems on my Volvo and a Chevy I used to own… buy an angle grinder to cut through anything you need to cut through. And have safety goggles with side protection, the angle grinder will through sparks everywhere.
My gut fealing is to just replace it from behind the cat all the way back - when you replace the whole system it is much easier and since you'll be doing the work yourself you could "justify" it by looking at the money you are not spending on labor.

You should be able to get it cheaper than that from an auto parts store. When I got a dual tipped replacement axleback for my 97 SE, it was only about $110 from a local parts store. The dealer will always rape you on price. Shop around a bit first. The quality will be jsut about the same...either way, I doubt you will keep it anoer 150k so you won't have to replace it again.

I forgot to mention, I recommend doing this sooner rather than later for the simple fact that it's still cold in the mornings. The slightest leak will result in noise, you can easily check for leaks on cold mornings by starting the car (after being left out all night) and looking for puffs of white smoke escaping the system.
