Attn Type R owners who now own a 06 SI
I used to own a 2000 and 2001 Type R and loved the "kick" when the engine engaged into Vtec. I have driven a RSX Type S and with the I-Vtec I could not feel the transition from the intake cam to the exhaust cam at all and it was horrible, I hated the car. Does the new SI feel like the Type R where it has the kick over and feels like a turbo kicking in or is it smooth and has no noticeable diference. I really loved my type r's and miss having a new honda that was the same horsepower and feel and am interested in a new SI but cannot drive one to know for myself since they are all presold, so I am asking those who have owned a type r and owned or driven a new SI to give me their opinions on this. thanks
The K-series has a smoother crossover and thus you won't feel a 'kick'. The B-series, as I read before, is more raw. With modifications, you will hear the crossover, but not necessarily feel it. If anything, the K20Z1 will be like a K20A2/Z3 and not like a B18C5.
you have got to be kidding me....i mean really...having a smoother crossover means alot more lowend power....if you can call the torque we have that. you wont find any stock cars anymore outside maybe the lancer evolution that kick in the power suddenly.
i am not sure what kind of rsx you rode in but my crossover is very distinct and there is a rather noticable power surge. I dont want to call it a kick....cause i wouldnt want a kick whiel i was coming out of a curve...that woudl just be death in my car

The Type R engine is different from the S. The S makes a lot more power down in the low end so it's a smoother transaction when engaging VTEC.
Either way you can still feel the switch over. If you doubt it, start out at like 5mph in 2nd gear and floor it all the way through redline. You will most certainly feel the switch then.

The "kick" that you feel means there was no power then there was power. In a properly tuned B-series, the transition is seemless (except for audible). The vtec "kick" = marketing IMHO

I do not own an FG2 but I have driven a couple of them.
The kick we used to feel in the old VTEC days was because Honda couldn't figure out any other way to do it.
With the modern motors, much of the power is handled by variable cam gear timing as well as having the high and low lobes on the cams.
The whole point was to get a seamless power increase as you went through the gears, and also to have power available at low RPM in high gears, where there was no power before.
I'm sorry if you miss the VTEC kick but, in fact, it was inferior to what is currently being produced.

To me the "Kick" is part of the fun factor of the car. I also owned a 2002 S2000 which also had the same feel as my Type R. I loved the way both engines felt. As the new I-Vtec I understand the mechanics and reasoning behind why the transition from the intake cam and exhaust cam has changed and am also aware of it's benefits, but for me I enjoy the feel of the engine as much as I enjoy the Horsepower. I have owned a ten second RX7 and did not enjoy the car very much at all for many reasons. Just like why those here who bought an SI bought one instead of buying a used Evo 8 or a used STI since they all sell for around the same price but are much faster. They bought the SI for the feel and the fun of the car, not for speed. If I was soley interested in speed I'd buy a Corvette or a 2003-04 Cobra. But instead I like a car for what makes it unique, and the feel of the engine is important to me, that is why I ask this question. So I take it from the responses I've received That it is a smooth transition?
yeah I own an fg2 and its pretty smooth, you can clearly hear and feel it but it is very much the gentleman. I understand completly what you mean about engine feel, in 20 years we will still be talking about b series engines like the old timers talk about the engins of their day.
