I'm changing the t-belt, tensioner, water pump, distributor o-ring, vtec solenoid gasket, oil, transmission fluid, and some other stuff...

So I'm reading through the Helm's to go over the procedures and looking at stuff on the internet, and the Helm's tells you to remove the cam gears before you change the water pump on a B18C1. Is this necessary? I only have access to air tools and such for about 3 hrs tomorrow, so I wanna make sure that I can get this stuff done in the time allotted, which means I have to plan everything out.

It would of been better i you took a picture of the water pump area. If that engine is similar to a B18B1 then no. Take off valve cover, use air tool for crank pulley bolt, make sure everything is TDC and... basically no.... but then again B18C could be different

 

No you dont have to remove the cam gears... take off crank pulley, timing belt cover, support engine, remove driver side mount, loosen tensioner, take off belt, replace water pump, ect.

Thanks for the help, y'all. There are two sets of instructions, one for the B18C1 and one for the B18B in the Helm's. It suggests to remove the cam gears on both engines to complete the procedure, so judging by what you guys are saying, I should be alright. I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

correct, the timing belt would ony have to come off but u are changing it so it will be off

 

u dont have to remove the cam gears. read a manual

Please refer to page 10-11 of the 1998 Acura Integra Service manual from Helm Inc.

1. Remove the timing belt...
2. Remove the camshaft pulleys and the back cover (B18B1 engine: see page 6-20, B18C1, B18C5 engines: see page 6-60)

Many times, there are several ways to do things. I only asked this question because of what the manual said. Thanks for the input, though.

Just Checkd my manual and your right it does say that. Pretty ******* weird if you ask me. But out of all the timing belts i did i never removed the camshafts gears. Also i wonder why they said pullys instead of gears. odd.

 

yeah you definately don't have to remove the cam gears. Maybe it's to give more clearance to get pudgy arms/hands in there? No idea. But we did a timing belt on a B18C1 and there's no reason to mess with the cam gears as long as they stay TDC

when i replaced my water pump i remmber removing the cam gears. im pretty sure i had to get the cover off fom behind the cam gears to get the water pump off.

 

You may want to remove the cam gears anyways if you have any evidence of leaking from the cam seals. It would be easy to do as the cam gear bolt is only held on by about 20 ft/lbs (on a SOHC), so they should come right off. Once the cam gears are removed, and the rear timing cover is removed, you can check the two cam seals & see if they are leaking. The cam seals can be pryed out & replaced without removing the cam caps, so changing them wouldn't be that hard if you do have a leak problem...

 

it says to do that because the timing belt service is supposed to include all of the oil seals on the front of the motor... the water pump, belts, thermo., VC gasket...so anyway, the easiest way to get the cam gear bolts loose because the belt holds them still for you. but you could get away without doing it, it's not in the way of the pump. and i know this is a late post and you've probly already had the motor appart, but what the hey...
